Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Rim fragment of a Medieval pottery vessel, probably a jug. The fabric is cream coloured with an inner core of black. There appear to be some small inclusions of a brown colour. The rim is slightly widened compared to the rest of the vessel, with a square shaped rim. The wall of the vessel is beginning to curve outwards but has broken before it goes far. The handle begins almost immediately after the rim, sticking out at 90 degrees to the vessel wall, but only a small fragment remains before it has broken.

Flint implement, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age in date. The flint is a grey colour with small white and black patches. There are also some patches of the cortex remaining. It is a large core which has had flakes taken off all over, one end has been worked in particular. This end has a sub-rectangular extension with a rounded end and has been worked on all edges. This extension could be used as a tool, perhaps a borer or something similar.

Cast copper alloy Medieval seal matrix, 14th century in date. Copper alloy circular seal matrix, hexagonal tapering handle with a broken circular suspension loop at top. Device of, in the centre, a twig-like tree with a nest at the top; in this, a bird facing left. Either side of this two figures rather crudely drawn: on the left, a young man in profile facing right, and on the right, a rather long head of a woman in profile facing left, no real details visible. A circular, cast copper alloy mount, with enamelling on the front face. The general style, decorative content and use of enamel suggests that it was made at the Limoges school in France, probably in the 12th or 13th century AD. The design in champlevé enamel is a trefoil, with a circle in the centre containing a quatrefoil. The quatrefoil has red enamel at the centre, then a band of dark blue, one of gr…
