Cast copper alloy Wirral type bow brooch.
Quite a large example at 57mm long it is mostly complete. The headloop has broken off, as has the pin but the foot is still present. The head is stepped up to where the headloop would have been. There are two steps with moulded beading as decoration.
The upper part of the bow has a panel which is split into three vertical strips. These strips would have been filled with alternating squares of coloured enamel. There is very little left but one of the colours appears to be red enamel. At the knee of the brooch is a circular boss. The lower…

Worn copper alloy contemporary copy of an as of Claudius (AD 41-54), most probably struck in Britain. Boon pl. IV, c.f. 46-51
Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example is a contemporary copy of those minted at the Lyon I, à la Grosse Tête, mint.

Copper alloy radiate copy of Carausius (287-293) minted in London, ... NI AVG, emperor standing right holding spear and globe. This coin is unusual. The reverse legend is unclear but is not that normally associated with this type: SAECVLI FELICIT (see RIC V, pt 2, 153). This coin appears to be an unpublished variety. This coin is included in Sam Moorhead's corpus for RIC.

Roman cast copper alloy skeumorphic type swastika brooch. The brooch is complete with the pin and catch mechanism still in place. The pin is on a hinge and has seized up with age/corrosion. The catch consists of a hook set at 90degrees to the lower arm. A very similar example can be seen in Hattatt's book (1987; 222-225; no. 1145). This type of brooch generally dates to the second half of the second century running into the 3rd century AD. The swastika, the 'crux gammatica' (a cross formed from 4 Greek capital gamma characters) was widely used long before the Christian period, possibl…

Copper alloy shield shaped harness pendant which dates to the 14th century. The pendant is complete and the enamel remains in place. The attachment loop is set perpendicular to the pendant. The coat of arms consists of a moth or butterfly (now white) with two wings on each side and some zig-zag lines of red enamel: an upside-down V above the head, one on each side of the neck and one which goes behind the tail. These are probably attempts to represent the antennae and legs rather than the decorative heraldic lines known as dancetty (Grant; 1948; 21). Insects are rare in heraldry gener…

Late Iron Age to Roman (1-200 AD) cast copper-alloy end-looped cosmetic mortar. It has a longitudinal groove which has been worn smooth. The knobbed terminal is small and simple and the loop is broken. The surface is worn all over and has begun to corrode.
