2 pieces of very highly vitrified clay. They are both broken on 3 edges and join together to form one piece. The clay is a dark reddish brown. One piece is triangular whilst the other is sub-rectangular. The clay has quite a lot of inclusions in, pieces of stone (quartz) about 2mm in size. The high level of vitrification suggests they were used in a high temperature industrial activity such as metalworking or glass working. The fact that it is vitrified and vesicular on both sides suggests it was used inside a furnace as some sort of support, rather than being part of the furnace wa…

Fragment of a copper alloy terret ring. The ring is very corroded and this is what gives it its grey colouring. It is about half of the original terret ring, both ends are broken. It was probably circular in shape with a flattened base. Terret rings are usually symmetrical. At one end is a circular knob which would have met a bar that would have been the flattened base. Next is a smaller knob which has a groove before it. The main body of the ring narrows towards what would have been the top. Terret rings are hard to date precisely as their use continued from the Iron Age thro…

Late Iron Age to Roman (1-200 AD) cast copper-alloy end-looped cosmetic mortar. It has a longitudinal groove which has been worn smooth. The knobbed terminal is small and simple and the loop is broken. The surface is worn all over and has begun to corrode. These implements are hard to date closely although most date from within the 1st-2nd centuries AD (Jackson; 1985; 175). Similar examples can be seen in Jackson's article (176- 179; fig.5; nos. 11, 14, 17 and 18).
