Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Manchester
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy finger ring, probably medieval in date. The outside surface of the ring is decorated with lines which make a zig-zag pattern and a dot in each triangle. The inside surface is plain and smooth. It is D-shaped in section. The ring has been cast but the decoration appears to have been added after casting. Cast copper alloy finger rings were found in London dating to the medieval period (Egan and Pritchard; 1991; 331-2).

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead bi-conical spindle whorl with a central circular perforation. It is circular in plan although there are some bits of corrosion attached to the edges. It is worn so the decoration cannot be seen very clearly. It has been decorated on both sides in relief with zig-zag lines and dots. Spindle whorls are hard to date precisely as they were used for a long period of time. Therefore this find has been dated broadly to the Medieval period.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy (with some copper/bronze) weight or perhaps a gaming piece. It is circular in plan and has a rounded top. The decoration has been moulded and is on the upper (rounded) face only. The decoration is in the form of a stylised sun with rays emanating from a central circle. The bottom of the weight is smooth. Weights like this can date from the Iron Age period onwards and are very hard to date precisely. This weight probably dates to the Medieval period.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy mount, probably a furniture mount. The mount is circular in plan and has been cast. Some of the edges have been lost either through corrosion or by being broken in use or whilst it was in the ground. The front face is decorated, the back is plain. The decoration consists of a slightly raised central circular boss surrounded by a ring of twisted wire effect. Around this is a line of pellets. The back is free from decoration and the remains of two rivets can be seen on the outer edge.

The two halves of the bell are separated by a raised median ridge. The upper half has two circular sound holes on opposite sides. The lower half has a sound slot with circular terminals. There is still mud inside the bell so its weight is heavier than would be expected.

Cast copper alloy fragment of a late medieval/post-medieval bell. Only half of the bell remains, the clapper is missing also. The top is flat and hexagonal when viewed from above. It has a circular perforation, presumably for an attachment loop. It looks as though the bell has been mis-cast as the top is not level. The lower part of the outside surface of the bell is decorated. It has two raised lines around the circumference. Below the second are two sets of 3 incised vertical lines.
