Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Trafford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pewter or lead figurine, probably late medieval in date. It is flat on the back and does not stand up but has no method of attachment visible. Standing robed figure with their right arm folded on the breast holding, possibly a crozier. The left arm appears to be holding onto the robe. It is not clear whether this is male or female. The head is worn but there is something on the top of the head, possibly a crown, which may suggest it is male. Geoff Egan has seen a picture of this figurine and says 'it is probably a component of some complicated scene or a figure among several on …

Lead pilgrims ampulla dating to c.1350-1530. Only the bottom half remains, the neck and the handles have broke off. It has been bent on one side and the break is very uneven. It has a pattern of a 6 petalled flower on one side and some decoration which is unclear on the other. Examples with a flower on can be seen in the Salisbury catalogue, figs.186-7 (Spencer; 1990; 91)

Cast lead spindle whorl from the Medieval period. It is slightly darker than usual, suggesting some tin is in the metal. It is bi-conical in shape and has a central circular perforation. It is decorated on both sides with cast decoration in the usual star and dot pattern. A dot in each point of the star and also on the outside of the star. This type of object has been used for centuries but this pattern would suggest a Medieval date.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire West and Chester
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Circular lead alloy weight probably from the Medieval period. The front of the weight has a circular depression in the centre, in which is an 'I'. The depression is surrounded by 2 incised circles which look as though they have been cast in at the time of making the weight. The 'I' appears to have been added later, by hand. The back of the weight is flat and has 2 lines scratched into it. It is likely these have been made through wear, or from the plough once the weight was in the ground. There are chips on the weight which are also likely to be plough damage. No typology has been m…

Lead alloy weight, probably from the Medieval or Post-Medieval period. It is circular in plan with an uneven rim around the edges on both faces. There is some corrosion and the surfaces are not completely even. There has been no typology done for these weights so it is hard to assign them to a precise date.

Lead token, possibly with religious links. It is circular and has been pierced close to the edge. One side is decorated with an eight petalled flower in relief. The other side has a central seated figure with a smaller figure on either side- possibly a mother/Jesus and child. These types of tokens are difficult to date precisely and so a broad date of 1400-1700 has been given.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire East
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy mount, probably a furniture mount. The mount is circular in plan and has been cast. Some of the edges have been lost either through corrosion or by being broken in use or whilst it was in the ground. The front face is decorated, the back is plain. The decoration consists of a slightly raised central circular boss surrounded by a ring of twisted wire effect. Around this is a line of pellets. The back is free from decoration and the remains of two rivets can be seen on the outer edge.

Lead alloy (with some copper/bronze) weight or perhaps a gaming piece. It is circular in plan and has a rounded top. The decoration has been moulded and is on the upper (rounded) face only. The decoration is in the form of a stylised sun with rays emanating from a central circle. The bottom of the weight is smooth. Weights like this can date from the Iron Age period onwards and are very hard to date precisely. This weight probably dates to the Medieval period.

Secular lead/pewter badge of a hound (possibly a Talbot-hound) seated, facing front. The badge has been cast and the decoration is in relief. The back of the badge is plain with no decoration but there is the remains of an attachment, in the form of a circular protrusion. The front of the badge is decorated with the dog which is facing towards the front. Its head is on the left and it has its back legs underneath itself. On the shoulder and the stomach there is an annulet. Above the dog is a pattern of leaves as decoration. The dogs ears are slightly worn. This style of dog is called …
