Silver meio real or chinfraƵ of Afonso V of Portugal (1438-81). Edward Besley saw an image of this coin and comments' Moot point as to which is the obverse, but following my reference: obv + ALFONSVS QVINTI REGIS P; five shields ('quinas') rev + ALFONSVS QVINTI REGIS PO; letter A surmounted by a large crown; annulets either side (the more usual reverse legends appears to be a version of ADIVTORIVM NOSTRVM IN NOMIN) The nearest reference I can get is that it is similar to C.M. Almeida do Amaral, Catalogo descritivo das moedas Portuguesas (Lisbon 1977), p.335, nos. 1009/1011. (No e…

Silver foreign groat This is a silver double patard: Flanders, Charles the Rash of Burgundy (1467-77), struck at Bruges, 1467-74, mint-mark fleur-de-lys in centre of reverse. Ref: H Enno Van Gelder and M. Hoc, Les Monnaies des Pays-Bas Bourguignons et Espagnols 1434-1713 (Amsterdam 1960), p.20, no.23-3. These were the exact equivalent of the contemporary English groat (slightly heavier, but slightly baser silver) and were made legal tender in England and Wales in 1469 [from memory]. They turn up singly all over the place and in hoards down to the 1530s.

Other examples on the database of this type of coin include SUSS-F264B1 and DOR-8D4A95.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy buckle plate from the Medieval period. It is a sheet plate, only the front half. It would have been a folded sheet but has broken so the back is missing. At one end are two circular rivets, one in each corner. The other end is recessed in the middle for the pin to fit. The front has a pressed decoration, possibly meant to represent a bird such as a peacock with a long tail. The head is circular and leads to a narrow neck. The body is oval shaped and then the tail is formed from a spiral.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Medieval bell dating from the 12-15th centuries. The handle has been cast and has an offset circular loop at the top which leads to the handle. The handle widens towards the bell which has been made from folding four triangles of sheet into a spherical shape. The bell would have been gilded and traces of this remain on the handle. The bell is full of mud so it is not clear if the pea still remains.

Cast copper alloy pin from a Medieval annular buckle or brooch. It has a square cross-section throughout. It narrows to a point at the terminal where a slight groove can be seen, this has been made through wear against the buckle or brooch frame. It is broken at the opposite end which would have been a circular loop to attach the pin to the frame. Only around half now remains. Before the loop is a slight rectangular moulding acting as a collar decoration.

Cast copper alloy ring of uncertain date. The ring has a hexagonal cross-section of varying thickness. It could have been used for many purposes. Copper alloy sheet buckle plate from the Medieval period. It is made from a sheet of copper alloy which has been folded in half. On the front there is a quadriped (probably a dragon) facing left in relief. There are 2 rivets at the end which hold the two halves together and would have fastened the plate onto a belt. At the folded end there are just two small sections at the edges, the middle is missing. This would have been folded over the buckle frame and the pin would have been folded over the buckle at this point. This sort of item is usually gilded but there is none visible…
