Strap fitting/ Mount Copper alloy strap fitting, broadly cruciform in shape. The main body of the fitting is rectangular in plan, and flat in cross-section. This flat rectangular plate is decorated with an incised motif of a square within a concave-sided triangle at the top and bottom outer edge, which would probably originally have been enamelled. Running across this central panel, at right angles, is a raised moulding, terminating on either side in a pair of trumpet-headed terminals. This raised moulding forms the other axis of the cruciform fitting. A central rectangular strap b…

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. The 'button' takes the form of an open ring, D-shaped in cross-section (flat on reverse) filled with two central circles, which are flat in cross-section. At the centre of each circle is a circular indentation with central pin, perhaps a setting for a stud. The right-angled shank for the loop (now broken), projects backwards from the area where one of the circles meets the ring. The object is heavily coated in accreted iron corrosion. Parallels: There are no direct parallels for t…

Strap fitting/ Mount Cast copper alloy strap fitting. This fitting takes the form of an open ring with an openwork triple-circle trefoil filling, flat in cross-section. In the centre of each of the three central circles is a circular indentation, with central pin remaining in two cases, and missing in the third. These may have been settings for studs. A rectangular strap bar is attached to the reverse of the ring, across the centre of the circular fitting. The object appears to have been slightly mis-cast, or perhaps another object has been partially melted onto this one. In some are…

Strap fitting/ Mount Cast copper alloy strap fitting, broken on one side. This fitting takes the form of an open ring with openwork S-shaped scroll filling, flat in cross-section. The inward spirals of the S-shaped scroll are solid circles with circular indentations, now heavily worn, perhaps once designed to hold enamel. On one side of the scroll-work, the outer ring has broken away. A rectangular strap bar is attached to the reverse of the scroll-work, at the centre of the circular fitting. The object appears to have been slightly mis-cast. Parallels: There are no direct paralle…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting, probably a strap junction, from the Post Medieval period. It is circular in plan (37.511m x 32.37mm) and slightly domed. . The upper surface is decorated by four sets of curved lines, in pairs, coming from the centre of the fitting, to the edge. There are also two circular perforations, one of which is now filled up with corrosion. It has two prongs on the reverse, which are quite 6.90mm wide, project 9.12mm down, and are sub-triangular in plan. These probably fitted onto the strap, or another plate.

Cast copper alloy late Roman belt stiffener. 'Propeller' belt stiffeners have a central roundel and two opposing triangular terminals. This example is very short and squat, with the central section being small, and the terminals larger than seen on other examples. Each terminal has two circular holes, one in each corner, these are for attaching to the belt. Below these holes, each terminal is decorated with two grooved vertical lines (when viewed in photograph). The central section is decorated with a central motif of three punched annulets. There is also an annulet at each edge. …

Cast copper alloy harness fitting, Post Medieval in date. Broad loop, a flattened oval when viewed in plan. The main part of the loop has a sub-circular cross-section, with a narrower section on the long bottom edge (measuring 17.18mm in width). The upper long edge widens, giving the impression of a bezel, pointed oval in shape, which has four grooved lines and ridges. A similar item, although in silver has been recorded on the PAS database as SWYOR-BO3DE1.

Cast copper alloy fragment of a late Roman belt fitting of some sort. It is incomplete and so is difficult to tell exactly what it was part of. It has uneven broken edges on all four sides. The reverse is plain, on the front is a pattern of ring and dot motifs, seemingly running in diagonal lines, but they are not that uniform, and as only part of the piece remains it is difficult to define the exact pattern. At one end there is a slightly curved section, which projects upwards, perhaps the start of a catch or attachment loop.

Cast copper alloy Roman belt slide. It is circular in plan and the front is slightly concave. On the reverse is a small semi-circular loop, used for attachment to the belt or other clothing. Cast copper alloy and enamel, Late Iron Age/ Roman belt slide. It is lozenge shaped in plan with an openwork design. The outer edge is decorated with a single row of red enamelled dots, some of which are missing the enamel. The central section looks like a 'swash-N' (as described by Macgregor, 1976) which consists of a 4-armed motif with each arm meeting a corner of the lozenge. In the centre are two raised pointed ovals as decoration. The arms which run from top left to bottom right are longer and wider than the other two as the motif is twisted and they have further decor…

Cast copper alloy Post Medieval fitting from a sword belt. A hooked tag or hanger, probably from a sword belt. It is mostly complete, the body comprising of two rounded segments, the hook at one end, the other widening out into an openwork section which has now broken. At the end near the hook are two circular perforations. In the second section, near the middle of the body are another two circular perforations. There appears to have been some decoration in relief but due to wear and corrosion this is now not clear. The openwork section (now broken) seems to have been a semi-circ…

Cast copper alloy part of a Medieval swivel, from the later Medieval, c.1300-1500. It is only one part, being a D-shaped loop which would have attached to an identical loop via a loop. On the flattened side there is a circular hole which is where it would have attached to the other sections. On either side of the hole the loop terminates into stylised animal heads with their mouths open, the flattened side being held in their mouths. The loop narrows away from the flattened edge. The loop measures 26.08 x 24.51mm and the flattened edge is 7.09mm in width.

Medieval copper alloy rectangular strap fitting with central bar and missing its pin, or alternatively a possible strap loop. Most likely 14th century. It is sub-rectangular in plan with a scallop on the outer edge (width of scallop- 10.86mm). It has been squashed slightly out of shape. The central bar is not in the middle, meaning one section is larger than the other. There has been some discussion on the PAS FLO Forum as to whether these objects are buckles, as none have been found with a pin and the height of the axis bar would make it rather clumsy. More likely is that they …

Cast copper alloy strap fitting from the Post Medieval period. It consists of a central, domed circular piece with a rectangular loop on one side and a circular loop (set perpendicularly) at the other. The central boss is decorated in relief with a lions face. Cast copper-alloy medieval swivel. It is incomplete- both the loops having broken leaving just arms on both sides. The central section consists of two half spheres joined in the centre. These objects usually have a gap in between the two central pieces in order to allow it to 'swivel' but this does not seem to have this facililty. The arms of the loops are irregular in size and shape so it is possible that this is a mis-cast.
