A complete lead weight or gaming piece, inset with glass, from the Early Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) period (AD850-1000). It is conical in shape with a wider base. The diameter is 11.35mm at the top and 13.58mm at the bottom. The top has a domed stone set in which is a dark blue. This record was edited and the date of the object reassessed following reappraisal by Prof. Julian Richards. A similar weight, although cylinder shaped rather than conical, was found during excavations of the 9th-century Viking settlement at Woodstown, Co. Waterford, Ireland (see: Russell and Hu…

Cast lead possible Roman weight. It is cylindrical, with a central iron core, which would have become a loop, but has now broken. Roman steelyward weights are usually biconical, not cylindrical but this example does have the iron core like the Roman ones, so it is possible it is Roman rather than Post Medieval.

Lead Medieval- Post Medieval in date. It is conical, and hexagonal in plan, tapering towards the top to a perforation (now filled with mud) which would have acted as an atttachment loop. It appears plain with no decoration.

Cast lead flat Medieval trade weight. It is shield shaped in plan with rounded edges. The front of the weight would have had a fleur-de-lys in relief but this has mostly worn away, leaving only the very tip visible. There are some scratches on both faces, these are most likely plough damage. This is a weight used on scales as there is no sign of an attachment loop.

Cast lead flat Post Medieval weight. It is trapezoidal in plan with rounded edges. There is a concave mark on the front face, possibly a capital G but it is not clear. This is most likely a weight used on scales as there is no sign of an attachment loop.

Lead shield shaped Medieval trade weight. It has a raised design on the front face of a fleur-de-lis, which has been slightly blundered. There is a lowered border around the edge. The reverse is flat and plain. This type of weight would have been used by merchants at fairs, markets or shops to weigh goods. Mostly they employed the avoirdupois system, which was used from AD 1390 in England. Lead shield-shaped weights of various qualities of workmanship and numerous designs have been in use over a long period of time. Therefore due to the lack of any further contextual evidence it…

Lead conical weight, probably Post Medieval in date. It is conical with a central circular perforation all the way through. It was found with a lead nail through the hole. The nail has a sub-circular cross section and a sub-circular head. It is an unusual form but is likely to be some sort of weight. The conical item has a weight of 32.9g, a height of 19.86mm and a diameter of 19.85mm. The nail weighs 12.9g, has a length of 33.91mm and a diameter at the head of 10.99mm.

Cast lead weight with an iron core. It is cylindrical in shape with a thin iron core protruding out the top which would have become a hook. Although it seems similar to Roman weights due to its iron core the shape is unusual so no specific date has been assigned.

Cast lead cylindrical weight, Medieval-Post Medieval in date. It is cylindrical with a large circular perforation all the way through. The ends are slightly rounded. The outer surface has some grooved lines, most likely caused by the plough as they are irregular and do not seem to be decoration.

Two lead weights, Post Medieval in date. They are sub-rectangular in plan, being rounded and slightly narrowed at the top end. They each have a circular perforation at the top end, presumably for attachment. The base is flat but there is a concave rectangular slot underneath. It is thought this sort of weight was used for fishing but they could have many purposes. Both weights were too heavy for my scales- which go up to 200g. Weight 1- Length- 61.92mm Width- 37.03mm Thickness- 12.17mm Weight 2- Length-63.03mm Width- 36.22mm Thickness- 12.68mm

Lead weight, possibly Roman in date. It is conical in shape with a rounded top and slightly irregular. The flat edge is the upper face and this has a central depression- possibly where an attachment loop once was. The surface is irregular all over due either to corrosion or poor casting of the weight. It was too heavy for my scales which go up to 200g. It has a length/height of 43.36mm and a diameter of 41.70mm.

Lead weight, of uncertain date. It has a thick iron core which has a circular section and has started to corrode and lose its shape. The weight itself is conical in shape with a flat upper and lower edge. The lead is a dark grey which suggests it is not pure lead.

Cast lead weight from the late Medieval- Post Medieval period. It is shield shaped in plan with slightly rounded and uneven edges. There is an incised design on the front, a crude privy mark. It takes the form of a W inside the outline of a purse (of late 15th-early 15th century type) and is probably the owners mark.

Rectangular lead weight, Post Medieval in date. It is not quite a rectangle, one end being narrower. It has a grooved pattern on the front, probably meant to represent a scallop. It is possible this was used as a trade weight and that the scallop symbolises a certain weight.
