Chain mail armour fitting Rosette-shaped gilded copper alloy boss, set onto iron chain mail. The boss is in the form of a moulded eight-petalled flower. In the centre of the flower is a concave circle with a raised central pip, perhaps a setting for enamel or a stud. The front surface, including the central circular setting, has been gilded. This piece is incomplete, missing one of its petals. Fragments of iron chain mail remain, adhering to the reverse of the boss. Parallels: There are no direct parallels in the 1843 hoard, but the style of the piece fits with other Late Iron Age ch…

Chain mail armour fitting Rosette-shaped gilded copper alloy boss, set onto iron chain mail. The boss is in the form of rosette, mounted onto a slightly larger circular boss, the outer face of which is decorated with moulded vertical lines. In the centre of the rosette is a ?drilled circular indentation, which may once have held enamel. The upper surface was originally gilded, although little now remains. Fragments of iron chain mail adhere to the reverse. The mail is extremely corroded and extends only slightly past the edge of the boss. Parallels: M.118 and M.119 from the related 1…

Copper alloy metalworking waste (two pieces) Two amorphous droplets of copper alloy waste, silvery in colour. Measurements: Max length: 15.5mm; weights: 4.8g and 3.4g (total 8.2g) Metallurgy: XRF analysis of the surface of these objects confirmed that they are composed of high-tin copper alloys (around 30% tin), with traces of zinc. Both also contained low levels of gold and silver. In the case of the smaller droplet, the gold content was higher, at around 10%.
