Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast bronze side-looped, socketed spearhead from the early Middle Bronze Age, c.1500-1150 BC. Mostly complete with the tip missing and worn blade edges. The blade would have been leaf-shaped and has a raised midrib on both sides running from top to bottom. The socket widens towards the end. It has two small side-loops about half way down. These are rectangular and have been cast integrally with the spear. The socket is slightly out of shape with the edge being uneven, however it is mostly circular in section and hollow. Nothing of the wooden shaft remains. Side-looped spearheads are …

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy Medieval seal matrix, 14th century in date. Copper alloy circular seal matrix, hexagonal tapering handle with a broken circular suspension loop at top. Device of, in the centre, a twig-like tree with a nest at the top; in this, a bird facing left. Either side of this two figures rather crudely drawn: on the left, a young man in profile facing right, and on the right, a rather long head of a woman in profile facing left, no real details visible. Unfortunately the edge of the seal is missing so no legend remains. A similar seal matrix is already recorded on…

Pottery spindle whorl, Roman- Medieval in date. The whorl has been formed from a piece of pottery cut from a vessek- probably when the vessel broke. It is circular in plan with a central circular perforation. It is flat on both sides with rounded edges. The fabric of the pottery is black on one side and brown/grey on the other. It is not clear if the black is the actual colour of the fabric or is due to wear/dirt. The fabric is smooth and has few inclusions. It appears to be a locally made pottery, and has not been especially highly fired. This sort of pottery is…
