Lead weight, of uncertain date. It has a thick iron core which has a circular section and has started to corrode and lose its shape. The weight itself is conical in shape with a flat upper and lower edge. The lead is a dark grey which suggests it is not pure lead.

Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Stockton-on-Tees
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible whetstone of unknown date. It is sub-oval in plan with rounded edges. It is a rounded oval in cross-section also with all edges rounded. It is made from a brown-grey stone. There are linear grooves on all the surfaces, possibly caused by sharpening tools. It is difficult to say that this is definitely a whetstone as natural stones could be used for this purpose without much working to make them suitable, this appears to be in that group.

Lead weight, possibly Roman in date. It is conical in shape with a rounded top and slightly irregular. The flat edge is the upper face and this has a central depression- possibly where an attachment loop once was. The surface is irregular all over due either to corrosion or poor casting of the weight. It was too heavy for my scales which go up to 200g. It has a length/height of 43.36mm and a diameter of 41.70mm.

Cast lead Post Medieval finger ring, a decade ring, dating to c.1600-1800. It is circular in plan with a projecting flat oval shaped bezel (diameter 10.60mm x 8.69mm) and ten small projecting knops around the outer circumference. The bezel is plain but on other examples there are designs and letters. This appears to be a lead version of the more usual copper alloy rings of this type. Decade rings were used for the rosary- to repeat the Ave and Paternoster prayers. They were introduced in the 10th century but became more popular at times of religious tension, in particular the 16…

Two lead weights, Post Medieval in date. They are sub-rectangular in plan, being rounded and slightly narrowed at the top end. They each have a circular perforation at the top end, presumably for attachment. The base is flat but there is a concave rectangular slot underneath. It is thought this sort of weight was used for fishing but they could have many purposes. Both weights were too heavy for my scales- which go up to 200g. Weight 1- Length- 61.92mm Width- 37.03mm Thickness- 12.17mm Weight 2- Length-63.03mm Width- 36.22mm Thickness- 12.68mm
