Cast copper alloy fragment of a Roman bow brooch, late 1st- 2nd century AD in date.
Only the foot and lower part of the bow remains. There are remnants of the catchplate on the reverse. The bow tapers to a point towards the foot, there does not seem to be a widening for the foot. It is very worn and corroded all over, with a light green patina.

It is sub-rectangular in plan, broken on all edges. The fabric is rough with large inclusions (perhaps chalk/shell), as well as air holes where inclusions have burnt out. The fabric is black with an inner core of light brown.

Cast copper alloy Roman disc brooch, 2-3rd century AD.
It is circular in plan with decoration in relief on the front. The decoration consists of a central cross, with rounded arms, inside two concentric circles. The cross was infilled with blue enamel, some of which remains. Outside the circles is a circle of dots and then a raised border meets the edge of the brooch. It is likely some of these fields would also have been filled with enamel but this is now missing.
The reverse is plain and has the remnants of the catchplate and pin mechanism. The pin and its mechanism…
