I have examined a group of 16 coins reported found at Stapleford, Lincolnshire All of the coins are silver and 14 of them are official English coins, which will therefore be of the traditional sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. Two of the coins are foreign in origin, but are of types found in English contexts quite frequently in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. One is a double patard of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, a coin that from 1469 circulated in England officially as equal to a groat. This was had a fineness of c. 80% silver. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the head, the shank starting from the centre of the trefoil. Copper alloy metalworking waste (two pieces) Two amorphous droplets of copper alloy waste, silvery in colour. Measurements: Max length: 15.5mm; weights: 4.8g and 3.4g (total 8.2g) Metallurgy: XRF analysis of the surface of these objects confirmed that they are composed of high-tin copper alloys (around 30% tin), with traces of zinc. Both also contained low levels of gold and silver. In the case of the smaller droplet, the gold content was higher, at around 10%.

Cast copper alloy scabbard chape, 12th century in date. The artefact is of thick sheet construction. Having been folded over on itself, it forms a trapezoidal shaped base section. It has 2 arms, meaning it plan it is U shaped. The base section is decorated on one face The arms, rectangular in plan, terminate in a lozenge. The terminals are perforated centrally and attached to each other by an extant rivet. The arms are decorated on one face with incised diagonal lines, running horizontally, along the whole length.

Boar figurine fragment Cast copper alloy fragment in the shape of a boar's head with an incised line perhaps representing the mouth and moulding along the upper ridge a spined crest. Probably part of a hollow cast copper alloy boar figurine. The surface is pitted and corroded. It is possible that this was an unfinished or mis-cast object. Parallels: Several similar Iron Age boar figurines are known, for example from the Hounslow hoard (see BM 1864,0501.9 and 1864,0502.17). This object comprises only a small fragment of the 'button' section, which would have been an open circle or oval. The flat front face is decorated with circular indentations, which may have been enamelled. Parallels: This fastener does not fit into Wild's (1970) typology.
