Object type: COIN HOARD
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
I have examined a group of 16 coins reported found at Stapleford, Lincolnshire All of the coins are silver and 14 of them are official English coins, which will therefore be of the traditional sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. Two of the coins are foreign in origin, but are of types found in English contexts quite frequently in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. One is a double patard of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, a coin that from 1469 circulated in England officially as equal to a groat. This was had a fineness of c. 80% silver. The last coin is a Portuguese sil…

Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This fitting has a flat trefoil 'button', formed from three adjoining circles. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the head, the shank starting from the centre of the trefoil. The shank emerges at 90° to the 'button', bending as it nears the loop, which is at an angle of around 30° to the 'button', in the same plane. The loop and shank are plain, but the front of the 'button' is decorated. Each of the circles which forms the …

Terret ring fragment Fragment of a very robust copper alloy terret ring. It is broken at both ends, leaving only a small section of the full ring. The ring is circular in cross section, and is decorated with a double lip moulding. There is a drilled circular hollow on the interior face of each lip, which may originally have been filled with enamel. There is a raised moulded line around the ring where it meets the lips on either side. Parallels: The form of the lips is paralleled in many terrets from the related 1843 hoard. In size the piece is closest to M 65-69, which al…

Terret ring fragment Fragment of a copper alloy terret ring. It is broken at both ends, leaving less than a quarter of the full ring. The ring is circular in cross section, and is decorated near one end with a double lip moulding. There is iron corrosion all along the fragment, which obscures some of the surface detail, but it is possible that this piece has been mis-cast. Parallels: The form of the lips is very similar to many of the terrets in the related 1843 hoard, being most similar to M.54, Spratling's (2011) style group III. Measurements: Length: 53.2mm; diameter of ring: 7.2m…

Harness fitting fragment (?bridle bit) Small fragment of a cast copper alloy harness fitting with lipped decoration. When complete, it appears that this would have consisted of an outer ring, enclosing a smaller decorative ring. The rings are flat on the reverse, giving a D-shaped cross-section. Both rings are now broken, the remaining fragment consisting of a pair of moulded lips, which lie across the joining section of the two rings. The lips are drilled on the inside, possibly to hold enamel. There is quite a lot of surface corrosion, and on the reverse of the object are the remai…

Cast copper alloy circular ring. The ring is circular in cross-section, although wider on one side than on the other, perhaps due to wear. This object is perhaps too small to have been used as a harness fitting, and it is impossible to be sure of its function. Copper alloy metalworking waste (two pieces) Two amorphous droplets of copper alloy waste, silvery in colour. Measurements: Max length: 15.5mm; weights: 4.8g and 3.4g (total 8.2g) Metallurgy: XRF analysis of the surface of these objects confirmed that they are composed of high-tin copper alloys (around 30% tin), with traces of zinc. Both also contained low levels of gold and silver. In the case of the smaller droplet, the gold content was higher, at around 10%.

Boar figurine fragment Cast copper alloy fragment in the shape of a boar's head with an incised line perhaps representing the mouth and moulding along the upper ridge a spined crest. Probably part of a hollow cast copper alloy boar figurine. The surface is pitted and corroded. It is possible that this was an unfinished or mis-cast object. Parallels: Several similar Iron Age boar figurines are known, for example from the Hounslow hoard (see BM 1864,0501.9 and 1864,0502.17). These figurines were sometimes fittings attached to vessels or helmets. Measurements: Length: 37.5mm; widt…

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Fragment of a cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This object comprises only a small fragment of the 'button' section, which would have been an open circle or oval. The flat front face is decorated with circular indentations, which may have been enamelled. Parallels: This fastener does not fit into Wild's (1970) typology. It is closely paralleled by a piece from the related 1843 hoard (M. 33, Spratling's (2011) style group V), and find no. 12 from the 2011 assemblage. Measurements: Length: 17.5mm; width: 7.6mm; thic…

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Possibly a fragment of a mis-cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This object consists of a single flat leaf-shaped panel, with a central raised circular moulding, concave in the centre, with central pip, possibly a setting for a stud. At one end, the remains of what may have been a second leaf-shaped panel remain, but this part of the object is broken and mis-cast. Parallels: This object is very similar to a fragmentary example of the 'button' from find no. 10, and may perhaps have been part of a pair to this…

Harness fitting fragment (?bridle bit) Fragment of a cast copper alloy harness fitting. This Y-shaped fragment, flat on the reverse, with moulded central indentation on the upper surface, is most likely from a bridle bit, forming part of the loop which would have linked the bit ring to the mouthpiece. Parallels: Similar to several examples from the related 1843 hoard, e.g. M.48. Measurements: Length: 22.7mm; width: 6.8mm; weight: 5.2g
