Pottery spindle whorl, Roman- Medieval in date.
The whorl has been formed from a piece of pottery cut from a vessek- probably when the vessel broke. It is circular in plan with a central circular perforation. It is flat on both sides with rounded edges. The fabric of the pottery is black on one side and brown/grey on the other. It is not clear if the black is the actual colour of the fabric or is due to wear/dirt. The fabric is smooth and has few inclusions.
It appears to be a locally made pottery, and has not been especially highly fired. This sort of pottery is difficult to date precisely without a vessel form and could just as easily be a local type made in the Roman period, or the Medieval.
