Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead Post Medieval disc from a large four-part cloth seal that has been cut as for a whizzer (or whirligig). The disc is circular with a zig zag edge. The front face has a crowned triple-rose with flowering plant motif at the sides, in relief. This is probably a part of a seal from the first ten years of George I reign, for a complete example see Egans book (1993, p74-5 no. 197). Geoff Egan discusses the use of this type of item- A whizzer is a zigzag-edged sheet roundel toy, (of lead for our purposes) with two holes centrally for a string, which is held in each hand, and by skilful t…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy 16th century signet ring. It is complete although the hoop narrows at certain points due to wear and corrosion. The bezel is flat with an incised decoration. Often letters are used on these rings but this example appears to be a design, however it is unclear what it is meant to be. The bezel has sloping shoulders down to the hoop.

Silver plated halfcrown of Charles I (1625-49). Being a plated coin would suggest this is a counterfeit coin. The coin is missing much of the legend, it could be that the flan was not made big enough or that it has been clipped.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy late Roman amphora shaped strap end dating from the late 4th century AD. The body is sub-oval with a knop with a moulded collar at the terminal. It is decorated with ring and dot motifs on both sides on the main body. One side has a single motif in the centre. The other side has nine motifs laid out in three parallel rows. The strap end has broken just as the main body ends and the top edge appears scalloped. This would have led into two openwork circles which would represent handles.

Cast copper alloy spout from a Medieval ewer. Medieval copper alloy ewer spout, dating to the 15th century. It was cast separately from the rest of the vessel and soldered on via a long sloping seam. The spout quickly tapers to become tubular with a moulded dogs head decoration on the spout terminal. The dog has slightly raised mounds for ears, its snout and eyes are represented by a concave depression with a sub-square spout protruding from its open mouth. This is a simple example of a well-known 15th century type; it would originally have been attached to a pedestal-base ewe…
