Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This fitting has a flat semi-circular 'button', with triangular central hole. This gives the impression of a rectangular panel along the base, with two angled leaf-shaped mouldings above it, forming the curve of the semi-circle. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the semicircular plate, the shank starting from a point just above the triangular void. The loop is at an angle of around 30° to the 'button', in the same plane. The bot…

Cast copper alloy Early Roman button and loop fastener. Tear-drop headed, dating to c. 50 -150 AD (according to Wild's typology, 1970). It is a slightly unusual type with a solid foot rather than a loop. The head is tear-drop shaped with a raised circular boss in the widest section. This appears to have enamel on originally and some traces of red (?) remain but the pattern is unclear. It appears to have been a central lozenge (of a dark colour) with four small ovals of red enamel around the outside. The foot projects from the base of the head, turning 90 degrees and widening, with…

Cast copper alloy Roman button and loop fastener. Wild Class III, tear drop shaped head, dating to c.50-150 AD. The loop is set on the reverse of the head. This is a slightly unusual type as the loop is also shaped as a teardrpo with a raised central circle. The head is larger than the loop and has a semi-circular hole before the pointed end. The patina is a mix of brown and green patches.

Cast copper alloy Roman button and loop fastener. Wild Class Va, dating to the late 1st- 2nd century AD. It is incomplete the loop having broken. The head is disc-shaped and has cast decoration in the form of a central dot surrounded by two concentric circles. There may have been some enamel in these recesses but no traces now remain. On the reverse of the head the bar which leads to the loop projects from the centre, then bends at 90 degrees to continue on. It widens towards the loop end. It is broken just at the point where the loop would have been, the very base of it can be…
