Fragment of a copper alloy Roman dragonesque brooch. It is incomplete, one head has broken off, leaving the body and one head. It has enamelled recessed panels on the front and is flat on the back. The design on the body consists of a central circle which has a cross inside with a lozenge shape at the centre of the cross. The area on each side of the circle is split into three triangles. It has eight semi-circular lugs around the outside and the front face is decorated by three concentric raised rings. The reverse is plain. Cast copper alloy Roman fantail brooch dating to the 2nd century AD. It is very corroded but is mostly complete with just the pin and catchplate missing. It appears to have been hinged. The wings of the head are worn and and one side is almost missing. They would have been rectangular when complete. The bow widens as it moves away from the head with a small circular boss at the waist. Below this the bow forms a triangular shape, hence the 'fantail' name of the type. The surface is uneven and shiny due to corrosion and wear.

Only the head and the upper half of the bow remains, the pin and its mechanism, whether spring or hinge are missing and the bow has broken just at the central acanthus style moulding. The trumpet shaped head is slightly broken and uneven, on the reverse is it hollow and the base of a hook, to hold the pin and its mechanism is still present. The bow has a circular cross section and widens at the acanthus style moulding which is a very crude version.
