Strap fitting/ Mount
Fragment of an enamelled cast copper alloy mount. This object appears to have been rectangular in plan when complete, although it may have formed part of a larger mount or fitting. The long edges of the rectangular plate have a lip projecting downwards. The object is broken along both of the shorter sides. The upper surface is decorated with inlaid enamel. This is laid out in a symmetrical herringbone pattern, on either side of a central dividing line. Traces of enamel remain. The mount has a rectangular-sectioned pin projecting on the reverse, in a perpendicular…

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal
Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal.
This fitting has a flat semi-circular 'button', with triangular central hole. This gives the impression of a rectangular panel along the base, with two angled leaf-shaped mouldings above it, forming the curve of the semi-circle. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the semicircular plate, the shank starting from a point just above the triangular void. The loop is at an angle of around 30° to the 'button', in the same plane. The bot…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Gold finger ring, probably of Roman date. The hoop consists of a narrow band, slightly elliptical in section. The ovoid bezel, which has been soldered onto the hoop, consists of an outer decorative band of beaded wire which surrounds a box setting for stone, now missing. The setting is crushed and damaged and the hoop bent and distorted.
Discussion: the ring is probably of Roman date, although this is not certain. A parallel for the style of the ring was found at Leeuwarden and published by Henkel (1913, no. 135).
Date: 3rd to 4th centuries AD?
Wt.: 2.41g D. of bezel: 9.5mm
