Fragment of a copper alloy Roman headstud brooch, dating to c. 75- 175 AD. Only the top of the bow and part of the head remains. The headloop has broken off, leaving just the base which is set on two steps, the upper one being decorated with a line of vertical grooved lines. The wings would have been square, possibly with steps, decorated with short horizontal lines, but again they are incomplete, leaving just one line on each wing visible. The bow is rectangular in section, narrowing towards the foot, but it has broken just below the headstud. The headstud is a raised circular b…

The bow has a circular cross section, widening at the waist for the moulding, a devolved acanthus. On the reverse of the bow at the waist, the start of the catchplate can be seen. The bow narrows again after the waist and is broken before the foot. The surface of t…

Cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch dating to c.75-200 AD. It is mostly complete with just the pin and one nose missing. These panels were filled with enamel in a chequerboard pattern, alternating in red and (possibly) yellow. Most of the yellow has gone whilst most of the red remains. Each end of the b…

Copper alloy fragment of a Roman bow brooch, late 1st- 2nd century in date. It is only the head which remains and it has been damaged. It could once have been a trumpet, or maybe a headstud brooch but it is difficult to define clearly. The axis bar remains, held in an integrally cast loop at the back of the head. The part of the brooch which remains is widest at the top of the head and narrows towards where it would have led into the bow. There is the remains of a lozenge shaped hollow with a smaller central raised lozenge, this could have been enamelled and so would indicate the br…
