Cast copper alloy Roman fantail brooch dating to the 2nd century AD.
It is very corroded but is mostly complete with just the pin and catchplate missing. It appears to have been hinged. The wings of the head are worn and and one side is almost missing. They would have been rectangular when complete. The bow widens as it moves away from the head with a small circular boss at the waist. Below this the bow forms a triangular shape, hence the 'fantail' name of the type.
The surface is uneven and shiny due to corrosion and wear.
