Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Rim fragment of a Medieval pottery vessel, probably a jug. The fabric is cream coloured with an inner core of black. There appear to be some small inclusions of a brown colour. The rim is slightly widened compared to the rest of the vessel, with a square shaped rim. The wall of the vessel is beginning to curve outwards but has broken before it goes far. The handle begins almost immediately after the rim, sticking out at 90 degrees to the vessel wall, but only a small fragment remains before it has broken.

Disc 1 has the conical stud on the reverse, which fits through the hole of Disc 4. The seal has been folded at the connecting strip between Discs 2 and 3. Each of the discs is sub-circular. Without any markings on it is not possible to date this example more closely as cloth seals were used over a long period of time.
