Part of a copper-alloy Medieval folding portable candle holder. This is only one piece of the whole. It is the pin with a semi-circular flange. The other strip would have been slotted to fit into this flange. The flange has three slots in it, into which the mechanism can be engaged to fix the candle at different angles. SWYOR-46F560 is a complete example on the database. Only six other examples of folding candleholders have been found on the database including LVPL-ABFE73, LIN-A11301 and NMS-1D35E4 which is the most complete. Examples can also be seen …

Copper alloy and enamelled Roman disc brooch dating from the 2nd century AD. It is mostly complete with just the pin missing and some wear around the edges. It is circular in plan and slightly domed. The front is decorated with inlaid enamel in a triskele motif. The outline of the triskele is in raised copper alloy and there is a central circular dot in copper alloy. The inside of the triskele is infilled with red enamel. The outside field is two-thirds black and one-third blue.

Copper alloy enamelled disc or plate brooch from the 2nd- 3rd centuries AD. It is hexagonal in plan with a circular plate on each edge, and is raised with a hollow reverse. It is mostly complete with just the pin and one of the six circular plates has broken off. The plate which has broken off would have had the catchplate on the reverse. Cast copper alloy headstud Roman brooch dating from c.75-175 AD. It is complete and in good condition. It is a hinged type. The headloop is made from copper alloy wire which loops into the wings and acts as the axis bar on which the pin is attached. Cast copper alloy handle fragment from the Post Medieval period. It is a curved handle which is broken at both ends. The main section has a circular cross section. The top section narrows towards the end and seems to be representing a birds head with the narrowest section being the beak. This would have attached to the piece of furniture which the handle was on, probably a small drawer.

Handle of a Medieval pottery jug, green glaze, c. 1200- 1500. The fabric is a light orange colour on the outside and dark grey on the inside. Cast copper alloy fragment of a Roman trumpet brooch dating to c.75-175 AD. Only the head and the upper half of the bow remains, the pin and its mechanism, whether spring or hinge are missing and the bow has broken just at the central acanthus style moulding. The trumpet shaped head is slightly broken and uneven, on the reverse is it hollow and the base of a hook, to hold the pin and its mechanism is still present. The bow has a circular cross section and widens at the acanthus style moulding which is a very crude version.

Copper alloy composite Medieval strap end. It is made up of two sub-rectangular sheets with a rounded lower terminal ending in a small rounded protrusion. The two sheets are pressed together. It has been bent almost in the middle and this has caused a crack on both sheet. On one side there are four circular holes, presumably meant as decoration, there are three in a diagonal line and the fourth is below this. On the other sheet, at the top is a small circular hole, this was probably for attachment to the strap.

Gold mourning ring. It has been squashed slightly out of shape. It has a central raised ridge running round the outside of the ring, in the centre. This is triangular in cross section and there is a small break at one point, possibly where the bezel once was? On either side of this ridge there was originally black enamel but most of this is now missing, only fragments remain. Inside the ring is an incised inscription reading 'Live well and die well' followed by TS stamped inside a square.

Cast copper alloy Roman hand pin, Cool Group 7. This type of pin has a hand holding an item, either an egg, pomegranate or apple. This example is probably an egg. The hand is holding the egg at the end of its fingertips and is held straight up from the wrist. The egg has a flat base which appears broken. It has been decorated with grooved criss-cross lines forming a lozenge shaped lattice pattern. The wrist is rectangular in cross section and has a hollow at the base, presumably to attach it to the pin.

Cast copper alloy fragment of a Roman figurine of Jupiter holding a lightning bolt in his right hand. Only the arm and lightning bolt remains. The arm is broken just before the shoulder and the break is worn so suggesting it occurred in antiquity. The hand is clasped round the lightning bolt which is formed by a twisted cylinder with pointed ends, it is 40.2mm in length. The arm shows the muscles in both the upper and lower arm. The patina is uneven with a mainly green surface but with some brown patches and slight pittting from corrosion.

Cast copper alloy purse bar fragment from the Post Medeival period, 15-16th century. Only one section remains, probably around half. The upper bar is cylindrical in section and decorated with a double X in relief. It narrows at one terminal which then has a circular nut over. The lower bar extends from the bottom of the upper bar and would have been rectangular with holes in from which to hang the purse bag. This is mostly broken now and the tops of two holes can just be seen.

This is probably a piece in the process of being worked into a tool which did not continue.

Small flint piece, possibly a small blade. It is made from a white flint with a greyish centre. The bulb of percussion is visible at the base. On the upper (dorsal) surface two flake have been taken off down the central line giving a trapezoidal cross section. This is probably a piece in the process of being worked into a tool which did not continue.

Cast copper alloy ring, Medieval- Post Medieval in date. It is sub-circular in plan and possibly penannular originally. Both terminals are narrowed to a point, these now slightly overlap. The ring has a dark green patina with lighter patches. Rings such as this could have been used for many functions over long periods of time and so are difficult to date precisely when found out of context.

Cast copper-alloy Early Medieval harness link, consisting of a small central dome with two arms, each terminating in a circular loop with three projecting knops. The central domed section has a projecting knop at the top and bottom. The surface is corroded and uneven with a base red-brown colour and patches of green. These harness links are well known from Britain and Scandinavia although their precise function is uncertain. A very similar item, although with four arms in a cross shape has been recorded on the database already and can be seen at LVPL-876B97.

The shaft is bent slightly before the scoop and there is a small groove just before. The shaft is circular in section. The item has a reddish-brown patina. Although many of these types of item are Roman the patina and style of this example suggests a Late Medieval- Post Medieval date. A similar example has been recorded on the database as YORYM-O271BO.

Copper alloy Early Medieval strap end, 9th- 10th century in date. Thomas Class A, it has a split end, is convex sided and has a zoomorphic terminal. It is worn and corroded on the suface so the decoration on the body is difficult to define. It could be Trewhiddle style which would define it as Class A Type 1 but this is not definite. The zoomorphic terminal consists of an animal head, with the nose and ears picked out in relief. At the split end there are two circular holes for rivets to attach the strap end, these rivets are now missing.

Each quarter then has four openwork circles. The main body is circular with a beaded/ scalloped edge. It has a rectangular loop at the top and the hook curves behind the main body from the base.

Cast copper alloy Early Medieval buckle dating to c. 900- 1200 AD. It is D-shaped in plan with a narrowed strap bar. The terminals of the loop are zoomorphic in form with the strap bar connecting two heads of animals. These are stylised animals seen on various objects from this period and could be dogs/dragons/dolphins, it is difficult to see. They have a rounded head with inset eyes and an elongated snout. The strap bar is worn and very narrow at one point, the pin is missing. The buckle has an even patina of reddish-brown.

Below the loop is a doubel moulded collar. The handle is hexagonal in section. The seal is circular in plan and is a 'h' with a palm frond next to it. The surface has possibly been silvered although it is now mostly worn away and there is some surface corrosion so this is difficult to be certain of.

It has anintegrally cast loop at one end and curves gently to form a shallow crescent. It narrows to a point at the terminal. It is thickest in the central part. There are some small scratch marks near to the loop which may be intentional but it is not clear. It has a smooth, even brown patina all over.

Cast copper alloy belt fitting, probably a sword hanger, from the Late Medieval period. It is linear in form and appears complete apart from the rivets which are missing. It has a thin, rounded terminal extension. It then widens to the main section which is rectangular in plan with a curved hollow profile. Cast copper alloy medieval harness pendant dating to post 1376- c.1450. It has a field of blue enamel with three raised fleur-de-lys, two above and one below, (azure, three fleurs de lys or). Cast copper alloy buckle fragment from the Medieval period. Just less than half remains. It would have been D-shaped with a narrowed strap bar. The terminals of the buckle before the strap bar are zoomorphic heads with the strap bar coming out of the animals mouth. The animal is possibly a dog, similar to the style seen on Late Medieval ewer spouts. A similar buckle can be seen on the database recorded as NARC-B9F980

Copper alloy Medieval buckle and plate, It is mostly complete. Circular in plan with a hook extending out from one side. It has a central strap bar, consisting of a strip wrapped round both sides of the buckle. The pin is attached to the strap bar, again this consists of a strip wrapped around the strap bar. A triangular plate fits onto the plate, and extends into the other half of the buckle from the pin. It has a section cut out where the pin fits and has a circular hole at the apex of the triangle. The plate measures 15.54 x 12.49mm.

Cast copper alloy Roman headstud brooch dating from c.75- 175 AD. It is mostly complete with just the stud missing. It is a hinged brooch and the axis bar is held in place by wings formed by the upper bow curving over to form a cylinder. The pin is complete but bent half way down. The stud was a separate piece attached onto a hole in the upper bow. The bow is flat and narrows to a thin strip around three-quarters of the way down the bow.
