Copper alloy enamelled Roman disc brooch. It is circular in plan but is missing a piece from one edge. It has a central raised boss which stands at 7.85mm high. The upper face is decorated with enamel, the back is plain. The decoration is split into two sections, an inner and outer circle. The inner circle is split into alternating strips of coloured enamel around the centre boss. Only one colour remains, it has corroded to a yellowish-white. There is then a raised band separating the inner and outer circles which is decorated with grooved lines all the way around. The outer circle …

Copper alloy radiate of Allectus, minted in London, 293-6 (Reece Period 14), ADVENTVS AVG, Emperor riding left, hiolding sceptre [no captive to left]. Mint of London, -//ML. RIC - Unpublished example. Find of note. This coin is included in Sam Moorhead's Corpus for RIC. The ADVENTVS type is not recorded for a radiate at London, but the type does appear on a gold aureus (RIC 1) which has a slightly different design with a captive to left. The type is recorded at 'C' Mint for a radiate, but with a captive to left of the horse (RIC 62) Finders ref- 2

Silver foreign groat This is a silver double patard: Flanders, Charles the Rash of Burgundy (1467-77), struck at Bruges, 1467-74, mint-mark fleur-de-lys in centre of reverse. Ref: H Enno Van Gelder and M. Hoc, Les Monnaies des Pays-Bas Bourguignons et Espagnols 1434-1713 (Amsterdam 1960), p.20, no.23-3. These were the exact equivalent of the contemporary English groat (slightly heavier, but slightly baser silver) and were made legal tender in England and Wales in 1469 [from memory]. They turn up singly all over the place and in hoards down to the 1530s.

Silver meio real or chinfraƵ of Afonso V of Portugal (1438-81). Edward Besley saw an image of this coin and comments' Moot point as to which is the obverse, but following my reference: obv + ALFONSVS QVINTI REGIS P; five shields ('quinas') rev + ALFONSVS QVINTI REGIS PO; letter A surmounted by a large crown; annulets either side (the more usual reverse legends appears to be a version of ADIVTORIVM NOSTRVM IN NOMIN) The nearest reference I can get is that it is similar to C.M. Almeida do Amaral, Catalogo descritivo das moedas Portuguesas (Lisbon 1977), p.335, nos. 1009/1011. (No e…

Cast copper alloy Roman dolphin brooch, dating to c. 75-175 AD. It is mostly complete with just the pin and some of the catchplate missing. The wings are cylindrical and hold the axis bar for the pin. They are decorated on the front with a symmetrical pattern of grooved lines; 2 vertical lines on each side of the head and then 2 diagonal lines next to that. The bow has the characteristic hump as it leaves the head and then curves down towards the foot, narrowing to a rounded point. The front of the bow is decorated with 2 lines running the length of the bow. The catchplate i…
