A small Roman copper-alloy anthropomorphic figurine representing a bound captive. The naked captive is crouching with his legs drawn up and together and his elbows on his knees. His arms broken at the elbows so the hands and lower arms are missing. The legs are broken at the ankles so the feet are missing. The posture is dictated by the shackles the captive bears: a rope would have connected his neck, hands and feet, with a loop around these three areas. Only the rope around the neck survives, with a small fragment also from the feet up towards the knees. The fibres of the rope are …

Silver shield-shaped Medieval seal matrix with a re-used red Roman intaglio set in the centre. The intaglio has come loose, it is sub-circular in plan. The inscription around the edge of the seal reads '+ : SIGILL : SECRETI :' The ovoid carnelian intaglio is damaged along its left-hand side but the remaining part is very finely engraved with a scene from Homer's Odyssey. To the right is shown the figure of a bearded Ulysses wearing a close fitting cap (pileus) and drapery which covers his torso and extended right leg and hangs behind his back. Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A circular, cast copper alloy mount, with enamelling on the front face. The general style, decorative content and use of enamel suggests that it was made at the Limoges school in France, probably in the 12th or 13th century AD. As with many of the Limoges pieces, it seems likely that it would have decorated a reliquary (religious casket) or a Christian book. The mount is circular and the front is convex. The design in champlevé enamel is a trefoil, with a circle in the centre containing a quatrefoil. The quatrefoil has red enamel at the centre, then a band of dark blue, one of gr…

A medieval gold posy ring made from a flat band 4.31mm wide and 0.77mm thick. It is engraved with a black-letter inscription in French which reads Jatens tenir (I wait to hold [you]). The inscription starts (and/or ends) with a group of three-pointed motifs, other motifs which are difficult to identify (from the photographs) and a sun with wavy rays. The words are separated by a five-petalled flower on a stem with leaves The finger-ring dates from the fifteenth century. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as T…

Gold finger ring, probably of Roman date. The hoop consists of a narrow band, slightly elliptical in section. The ovoid bezel, which has been soldered onto the hoop, consists of an outer decorative band of beaded wire which surrounds a box setting for stone, now missing. The setting is crushed and damaged and the hoop bent and distorted. Discussion: the ring is probably of Roman date, although this is not certain. A parallel for the style of the ring was found at Leeuwarden and published by Henkel (1913, no. 135). Date: 3rd to 4th centuries AD? Wt.: 2.41g D. of bezel: 9.5mm Re…
