Cast copper alloy scabbard chape, 12th century in date.
The artefact is of thick sheet construction. Having been folded over on itself, it forms a trapezoidal shaped base section. It has 2 arms, meaning it plan it is U shaped.
The base section is decorated on one face
The arms, rectangular in plan, terminate in a lozenge. The terminals are perforated centrally and attached to each other by an extant rivet. The arms are decorated on one face with incised diagonal lines, running horizontally, along the whole length.

Cast copper alloy late Medieval sword chape, c.1400-1600.
Only one half remains, the front half, its edges are curved round and would have attached to the flat back plate. This is broken at the top also. It would have had a scalloped edge along the top and only one corner remains of the original edge. There are two circular holes in the upper section and this would probably have been mirrored on the other side (now missing. Below this is a slightly raised horizontal line. Copper alloy Roman peltate chape, dating from the 2nd-3rd centuries AD.
It has been cast in one. It is complete with the front and back plate being identical. The design is peltate shape with two openwork petae on the face. The chape has been squahed slightly and so the top edges are nearly touching and one arm has a crack in.
Similar examples were found at Housesteads and South Shields Roman forts and these items are usually related to military activity.

Cast coppper alloy Iron Age sword scabbard dating to the first century AD.
When viewed from above the scabbard is oval in shape, widening from the bottom to the top. When viewed from the front its shape is sub-triangular with a small triangular knop at each end. The face has a raised border all the way around, this is wider on the top than the bottom. It is symmetrical on the front and reverse. The scabbard has a height of 16.93mm.
The scabbard has a mottled green patina with varying shades.
