Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy Post Medieval dress hook. The main body is a circular domed boss. It is hollow on the reverse and on the front has some decoration in relief although corrosion has made this unclear. At the top it narrows upwards towards a rectangular neck. At the bottom is a circular loop which would have led into the curved hook but it has broken at the loop. There are also two loops near the neck, one on either side. The hook is pitted all over and has a mixed patina of red and yellow due to corrosion. Read Early Post Medieval Class A, Type 1, c. 1500-1650.

Fragment of Medieval (1250-1350) copper alloy buckle frame of Meols Type 11, consisting of the outside ‘roller’ edge and a short part of the adjoining frame at either end. The outer edge is really all that remains with the narrow pointed terminals being all that is left of the frame. Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrate a similar frame, (p. 72-3 ref. 293), and Whitehead (2003) p.9 no.11. A similarly broken buckle has been recorded on the database as WILT-4D30F2.

Cast copper alloy fragment from a medieval harness fitting. It consists of a sub-shield shaped piece with a circular shaft extending from the pointed end. The shaft is short and straight and most likely to be broken but wear makes this difficult to confirm. It is very worn all over and corrosion has caused pitting of the surface. There are small fragments of red enamel on one face of the shield but the design is totally missing. It is possible that the shield had a design on both faces- possibly heraldic in nature. This item is probably from the same group of fittings as harness penda…
