The toweres are picked out in red (gules) enamel. The pendant has a broken attachment loop at the top. Irene Szymanski has seen an image of this item and commented- 'I think these are the arms of Ferrers and the earls of Derby, "vairy or and gules" (attached). The de Ferrers were a powerful and bellicose clan, who married wives of the highest rank; for example, Earl William de Ferrers (died 1254) marri…

Cast copper alloy quatrefoil medieval harness pendant It has four semi-circular lobes with a triangular point in between each lobe. It is decorated on the front face with enamel. In the centre is a dragon passant left in red (gules). The dragon is inside a square, on each side of this a lis extends out. The field is blue (azure). The pendant has a broken attachment loop at the top which is set perpendicular. Irene Szymanski has seen a photograph of this pendant and comments that this design is fairly common. If you go to IHS-11E882; its associated finds will link to other examples. Th…

Cast copper alloy Medieval harness pendant with the hanger. It is a shield shaped pendant with red enamel on the front. In its current state, the arms on this piece are "[background unknown], two bars gules and in chief three torteaux [roundels gules]". There is a circular attachment loop at the top set perpendicular to the pendant. A bar would have gone through this loop to attach the pendant to the hanger. The hanger consists of a rectangular panel with a semi-circular cross section from which extends

Cast copper alloy fragment from a medieval harness fitting. It consists of a sub-shield shaped piece with a circular shaft extending from the pointed end. The shaft is short and straight and most likely to be broken but wear makes this difficult to confirm. It is very worn all over and corrosion has caused pitting of the surface. There are small fragments of red enamel on one face of the shield but the design is totally missing. It is possible that the shield had a design on both faces- possibly heraldic in nature. This item is probably from the same group of fittings as harness penda…

Cast copper alloy Medieval harness pendant, quatrefoil in plan, dating to c.12-1400. It is quatrefoil in plan with some red enamel remaining from the design. It is worn on both the front and the back and the suspension loop is missing. It is difficult to see what the design would have been originally due to the wear and the loss of enamel. It was probably a griffin passant in red enamel similar to no.202 in Ashley.

Cast copper alloy medieval harness pendant dating to post 1376- c.1450. It has a field of blue enamel with three raised fleur-de-lys, two above and one below, (azure, three fleurs de lys or). The fleur-de-lis and the thin border have been gilded. There is an attachment loop set perpendicular to the pendant at the top, the loop is broken. Irene Szymanski has seen an image of this pendant and comments 'It's what's known as France Modern, France Ancient (azure, semy de lys or) was similar, except that there were an unspecified number of fleurs-de-lys scattered over the blue bac…

Cast copper alloy Medieval harness pendant, c.1200-1400. It is lozenge shape in plan with an attachment loop at the top which has now broken off. The front face is decorated in relief with enamel filling in the field. There is a central W with a fleur-de-lys above. It is possible there were other symbols in the field but it is difficult to see due to the corrosion. The enamel is very corroded but appears to have been dark blue or black. There are fragments of gilding remaining which indicate the border and the design were gilded. The pendant is now quite badly co…

Cast copper alloy enamelled Medieval harness pendant. It is shield shaped with a circular attachment loop set perpendicular to the pendant at the top. The pendant's upper surface features moulded heraldic decoration in the form of three lions passant guardant arranged one above the other. The field is inlaid with red enamel and, although no trace survives of gilding, it is supposed that this is the typical English arms, 'Gules three lions passant guardant [Or]'. Many such examples can be found illustrated in Ashley (2002, 10; e.g. ref. 50). The red-brown metal is indicative …

Cast copper alloy Medieval shield shaped harness pendant. The body is shield shaped but it appears some of the edges are missing, one edge in particular is uneven. The attachment loop, set perpendicular to the body at the top, is broken. It is extremely corroded over all surfaces and no traces of the design remain. The pendant has a grey-ish patina with green and orange corrosion products accreted onto the surface.

Cast copper alloy Medieval harness pendant. It is circular in plan with 6 circular lobes around the outer edge. It is raised and has a pattern cast in relief on the front. This pattern is no longer clear due to corrosion and wear. It is most likely the fields around the raised design would have been infilled with enamel. Some traces of a glassy blue remain on the lower right hand side. The attachment loop which would have extended out of the topmost lobe has broken off. The reverse is plain. The pendant is extremely corroded and the surfaces are uneven due to corrosion pro…

Cast copper alloy Medieval harness pendant, c. 1200- 1400. The pendant is shield shaped in plan, with the broken attachment set perpendicular at the top. On the front face there is the top half of an X in red enamel, which would have filled the field. The rest of the field was probably either enamelled in another colour, or gilded. There is a layer of what could be corroded enamel but it no longer has any colour. The reverse is plain. The hanger is T-shaped in plan, the terminal being bifurcated with holes in each end, to allow a bar to hold the pendant in place (the bar is now …
