Record ID: DUR-B12E87
Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hartlepool
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy pendant or mount, late Medieval to Post Medieval in date. It has a large circular loop at the top, the pendant body would have been lozenge shape when complete with scalloped edges but some parts are missing. There is decoration in relief on the front face which is now obscured by wear and corrosion, it appears to have been symmetrical with some zig-zag lines. The reverse is mainly flat with a off-centre circular dent, possibly where a stud was attached, this is unclear.

These are stylised animals seen on various objects from this period and could be dogs/dragons/dolphins, it is difficult to see. They have a rounded head with inset eyes and an elongated snout. The strap bar is worn and very narrow at one point, the pin is missing. The buckle has a reddish patina, with…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hartlepool
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy Late Medieval finger ring. The hoop has a circular cross section and widens at the angular shoulders. The hoop is broken near to the bottom but is complete, just being bent slightly out of shape. Because of this the hoop is not fully circular and measures 27.6mm x 25.71mm. The bezel is sub-oval and flat. It has a design in relief in the centre which consists of a W with an indistinct design above- possibly representing a crown- with two scroll like patterns visible. This type of ring is known as a signet ring and the design could relate to a specific family.
