I have examined a group of 16 coins reported found at Stapleford, Lincolnshire All of the coins are silver and 14 of them are official English coins, which will therefore be of the traditional sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. Two of the coins are foreign in origin, but are of types found in English contexts quite frequently in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. One is a double patard of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, a coin that from 1469 circulated in England officially as equal to a groat. This was had a fineness of c. 80% silver. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the head, the shank starting from the centre of the trefoil. The shank emerges at 90° to the 'button', bending as it nears the loop, which is at an angle of around 30° to the 'button', in the same plane. Copper alloy metalworking waste (two pieces) Two amorphous droplets of copper alloy waste, silvery in colour. Measurements: Max length: 15.5mm; weights: 4.8g and 3.4g (total 8.2g) Metallurgy: XRF analysis of the surface of these objects confirmed that they are composed of high-tin copper alloys (around 30% tin), with traces of zinc. Both also contained low levels of gold and silver. In the case of the smaller droplet, the gold content was higher, at around 10%.

Cast copper alloy scabbard chape, 12th century in date. The artefact is of thick sheet construction. Having been folded over on itself, it forms a trapezoidal shaped base section. It has 2 arms, meaning it plan it is U shaped. The base section is decorated on one face The arms, rectangular in plan, terminate in a lozenge. The terminals are perforated centrally and attached to each other by an extant rivet. The arms are decorated on one face with incised diagonal lines, running horizontally, along the whole length.

In plan the chape has a semi-circular lower half with a small extension knop at the base. It is decorated with incised lines, giving a scallop effect which meet at the centre in a semi-circular hollow. Above this are two circular holes, one to the left and one to the right of this hollow. The upper half is narrower, and sub-rectangular, with crenellations at the top edge. Near the top is a heart-shaped hole.

Ring (from harness?) Cast copper alloy circular ring, with flat upper and lower faces, and facetted edges, giving it an almost hexagonal cross section. This object could have been used as a harness fitting, but it is impossible to be sure of its function. Parallels: Rings like this could be put to many uses, and are found on sites of all periods, so it is impossible to be certain of an Iron Age date for this find. However, a similar, although slightly larger, ring was also reported as part of the related 1843 material (M.95) Measurements: Thickness: 3.4mm; diameter: 27.2mm; weight: 5.9g

Strap fitting/ Mount Fragment of an enamelled cast copper alloy mount. This object appears to have been rectangular in plan when complete, although it may have formed part of a larger mount or fitting. The long edges of the rectangular plate have a lip projecting downwards. The object is broken along both of the shorter sides. The upper surface is decorated with inlaid enamel. This is laid out in a symmetrical herringbone pattern, on either side of a central dividing line. Traces of enamel remain. Cast copper alloy fragment of a Post Medieval drawer handle. It has a strip of copper alloy folded over through the top loop, presumably to attach the fitting to the drawer. The main body has a rectangular attachment loop with protruding corners and a raised lower line. It then narrows to a neck, before widening into what would have been a sub-rectangular body with leaf/floriate design on the front. This has broken only a short way down.

Cast copper alloy Post Medieval fob seal, mostly likely 19th century in date. It is made completely of copper alloy, with the seal section being just a flat oval disc of copper alloy (measuring 17.49mm by 14.84mm). The symbol on the seal is a masonic symbol, The Square, Compasses and Letter 'G'. This is one of the most common symbols of the Freemasons. There are varying theories as to what it represents. The arms of the seal form a robust openwork design with floriate decoration, terminating in a circular attachment loop, set perpendicular to the seal.

Cast copper alloy early Post Medieval dress hook/fitting, Read class A, Type 2 (p.168-171). It is sub-oval in plan with a rectangular loop at the top and three attachment knops, one at the bottom, and one on either side. Each of the knops has a circular perforation for attachment. Below the top rectangular loop is a double collar consisting on two horizontal lines. It has been engraved/punched on the front for decoration, the reverse is plain. Cast copper alloy clapper bell, Post Medieval in date. It appears to have been tinned on the surface as it has a silvery looking patina. The bell is complete but is missing the clapper. It has an integral copper alloy attachment loop at the top, this has broken so the loop is open. The bell flares at the base, and on the inside is written the alphabet, it appears to have been cast into the design. Gold Post Medieval finger ring, uncertain date. A plain gold band, with a slightly raised central ridge on the outside. The ring has been squashed out of shape but originally but have been round. The band is thin, and flat on the inside. Judy Rudoe (British Museum) has seen an image of this ring and is happy that it is undiagnostic, so cannot be assigned a pre-1700 date. As such it does not constitute Treasure.

Rim fragment of a Medieval pottery vessel, probably a jug. The fabric is cream coloured with an inner core of black. There appear to be some small inclusions of a brown colour. The rim is slightly widened compared to the rest of the vessel, with a square shaped rim. The wall of the vessel is beginning to curve outwards but has broken before it goes far. The handle begins almost immediately after the rim, sticking out at 90 degrees to the vessel wall, but only a small fragment remains before it has broken.

Four disc lead late Medieval- Post Medieval cloth seal, unused, dating to 1400- 1800. It is complete, and has been folded in half, but not put together, and not stamped with any design. Disc 1 has the conical stud on the reverse, which fits through the hole of Disc 4. The seal has been folded at the connecting strip between Discs 2 and 3. Each of the discs is sub-circular. Without any markings on it is not possible to date this example more closely as cloth seals were used over a long period of time.

The strap bar is oval in cross-section, but the ring itself has a D-shaped section, curved on the front and flat on the reverse. In the centre of each of the three central circles is a circular indentation, with central pin remaining in two cases, and missing in the third. These may have been settings for studs.
