Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Fragment of a cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This object comprises only a small fragment of the 'button' section, which would have been an open circle or oval. The flat front face is decorated with circular indentations, which may have been enamelled. Parallels: This fastener does not fit into Wild's (1970) typology. It is closely paralleled by a piece from the related 1843 hoard (M. 33, Spratling's (2011) style group V), and find no. 12 from the 2011 assemblage. Measurements: Length: 17.5mm; width: 7.6mm; thic…

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Possibly a fragment of a mis-cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This object consists of a single flat leaf-shaped panel, with a central raised circular moulding, concave in the centre, with central pip, possibly a setting for a stud. At one end, the remains of what may have been a second leaf-shaped panel remain, but this part of the object is broken and mis-cast. Parallels: This object is very similar to a fragmentary example of the 'button' from find no. 10, and may perhaps have been part of a pair to this…

Chain mail armour Flat, irregular lump of corroded iron chain mail. Copper alloy corrosion may mark the area where a boss or other fitting was once attached. Parallels: Similar to other Late Iron Age chainmail fragments recovered from the area, e.g. M.117, M.118, and the mail attaching to find no.s 4-7 from this group. Measurements: Thickness: 10.9mm; diameter: 29.2mm; weight: 10.9g

Harness fitting fragment (?bridle bit) Fragment of a cast copper alloy harness fitting. This Y-shaped fragment, flat on the reverse, with moulded central indentation on the upper surface, is most likely from a bridle bit, forming part of the loop which would have linked the bit ring to the mouthpiece. Parallels: Similar to several examples from the related 1843 hoard, e.g. M.48. Measurements: Length: 22.7mm; width: 6.8mm; weight: 5.2g

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Fragment of a cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This object is incomplete with only the loop, shank and a small part of the 'button' remaining. The complete 'button' would have taken the form of an open oval or circle. The flat front face of this ring is decorated with circular indentations, which may have been enamelled. The shank is at an angle of 90° to the 'button' and the loop (which are parallel and in the same plane). Parallels: This fastener does not fit into Wild's (1970) typology. It is closely paralle…

Strap fitting/ Mount Copper alloy strap fitting, broadly cruciform in shape. The main body of the fitting is rectangular in plan, and flat in cross-section. This flat rectangular plate is decorated with an incised motif of a square within a concave-sided triangle at the top and bottom outer edge, which would probably originally have been enamelled. Running across this central panel, at right angles, is a raised moulding, terminating on either side in a pair of trumpet-headed terminals. This raised moulding forms the other axis of the cruciform fitting. A central rectangular strap b…

Part A (8 pieces, total 31g), Small irregular, amorphous fragments of copper alloy casting waste. Part B Small fragment of copper alloy strip, broken at both ends. Only a short length remains. It may originally have formed part of the binding or similar from a larger object or fitting. Measurements: Length: 20.4mm; width: 9.8mm; edge thickness: 1.6mm; weight: 1.7g Part C Small fragment of copper alloy binding strip with a C-shaped cross-section. It is broken at both ends, and only a short length remains. Parallels: Similar binding strips were recovered as part of the related 184…

Strap fitting/ Mount Fragment of a cast copper alloy mount, possibly related to harness. This object appears to be broken, and perhaps also mis-cast, making the original form difficult to discern. The body of the mount is rectangular, with a two-part rectangular strap bar on the underside. A projecting segment which may have been an extension on the side of the rectangular body of the mount is now broken. On the upper side of the rectangular plate, at each end, project two circular-sectioned studs with circular heads. Parallels: No direct parallels have been found for the form …

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. The 'button' takes the form of an open ring, D-shaped in cross-section (flat on reverse) filled with two central circles, which are flat in cross-section. At the centre of each circle is a circular indentation with central pin, perhaps a setting for a stud. The right-angled shank for the loop (now broken), projects backwards from the area where one of the circles meets the ring. The object is heavily coated in accreted iron corrosion. Parallels: There are no direct parallels for t…
