Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Strap fitting/ Mount Cast copper alloy harness fitting, taking the form of a ring with small rectangular strap bar on the reverse. The strap bar is oval in cross-section, but the ring itself has a D-shaped section, curved on the front and flat on the reverse. At least one circular hole has been drilled into the front of the ring, probably intended to hold enamel, as seen on many other fittings from this site. Parallels: The form of this object is most similar to M.14 from the related 1843 hoard, although that example had lipped decoration, whereas this find is plain. Measurements: Th…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Strap fitting/ Mount Cast copper alloy strap fitting. This fitting takes the form of an open ring with an openwork triple-circle trefoil filling, flat in cross-section. In the centre of each of the three central circles is a circular indentation, with central pin remaining in two cases, and missing in the third. These may have been settings for studs. A rectangular strap bar is attached to the reverse of the ring, across the centre of the circular fitting. The object appears to have been slightly mis-cast, or perhaps another object has been partially melted onto this one. In some are…

Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This fitting has a flat semi-circular 'button', with triangular central hole. This gives the impression of a rectangular panel along the base, with two angled leaf-shaped mouldings above it, forming the curve of the semi-circle. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the semicircular plate, the shank starting from a point just above the triangular void. The loop is at an angle of around 30° to the 'button', in the same plane. The bot…

Terret ring fragment Fragment of a mis-cast copper alloy terret ring. A short section of the circular-sectioned terret ring remains, ornamented with a pair of moulded lips, which are mis-cast. There is iron corrosion around one end of the fragment. Parallels: The form of the lips is very similar to many of the terrets in the related 1843 hoard, but the fragment is too distorted to find a secure parallel. Measurements: Length: 42.6mm; width of lipped moulding: 26.5mm; diameter of ring: 9.46mm; weight: 50g

Object type: CART FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cart fitting Large copper alloy pin with tapering conical shaft and balustered head, with an incised line around the circumference of the pin at the base of the head. Possibly the terminal of a copper alloy and iron linch pin, although the long tapering copper alloy pin would be unusual. One side of the pin is heavily encrusted with iron corrosion, supporting the suggestion that this formed part of a larger object which included iron components. Parallels: This type of pin is most closely paralleled by Palk's (1992) Type IIa (Iron linch pins with baluster-headed copper alloy …

Terret ring fragment Fragment of a mis-cast copper alloy terret, broken at both ends. A short section of the circular-sectioned terret ring remains, ornamented with a pair of moulded lips. The fragment is severely mis-shapen. Parallels: The form of the lips is very similar to many of the terrets in the related 1843 hoard, but the fragment is too distorted to find a secure parallel. Terret ring fragment Fragment of a cast copper alloy terret ring, consisting predominantly of a rectangular-sectioned strap bar with strap bar guard, delimited on either side by disc-shaped terminals. The strap bar guard is triangular in cross-section, decorated along the apex with a line of indentations. Short portions of the oval-sectioned terret ring remain on either side of the strap bar terminals. The outer edge of the terret ring is ornamented with incised decoration similar to that seen on the strap bar guard. Parallels: No similar terrets are known from the related 1843 hoar…

Balustered ferrule Copper alloy balustered ferrule, with perforated cylindrical central shaft, expanding into disc-shaped mouldings at centre and one end. The other end of the shaft is distorted, as if it had been crushed. Parallels: This is similar to a ferrule from the related 1843 hoard, M.81.
