Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County Durham

Rim fragment of a Medieval pottery vessel, probably a jug. The fabric is cream coloured with an inner core of black. There appear to be some small inclusions of a brown colour. The rim is slightly widened compared to the rest of the vessel, with a square shaped rim. The wall of the vessel is beginning to curve outwards but has broken before it goes far. The handle begins almost immediately after the rim, sticking out at 90 degrees to the vessel wall, but only a small fragment remains before it has broken.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pottery spindle whorl, Roman- Medieval in date. The whorl has been formed from a piece of pottery cut from a vessek- probably when the vessel broke. It is circular in plan with a central circular perforation. It is flat on both sides with rounded edges. The fabric of the pottery is black on one side and brown/grey on the other. It is not clear if the black is the actual colour of the fabric or is due to wear/dirt. The fabric is smooth and has few inclusions. It appears to be a locally made pottery, and has not been especially highly fired. This sort of pottery is…

One is almsot the full handle, the other is just the top section where it meets the vessel and shows it would have been right at the top as it extends out into the rim. Fragment of late Medieval- Post Medieval pottery which has a blob of lead on the inside. It is a base sherd of a vessel made from a cream coloured fabric. There are traces of a darkish glaze on the outside bt it is quite abraded. The lead is on the inside and does not appear to be a pot mend as it is sat on the surface and does not go through the pot. It is odd, perhaps just an accidental spillage.
