Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead ship/boat, Post Medieval in date, some sort of toy. The ship is flat on the base so that it sits on a surface. It has its sails unfurled and they are curving to indicate wind from behind the ship. It is a little worn but it appears there is a person sat/stood at the rear of the boat, possibly steering it. This is a toy of some sorts, possibly a version of a shy cock, where the aim would be to knock it over, or possibly just a toy by itself. Lead was used to make toys from the late Medieval period onwards and there is a huge variation.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead flat Medieval trade weight. It is shield shaped in plan with rounded edges. The front of the weight would have had a fleur-de-lys in relief but this has mostly worn away, leaving only the very tip visible. There are some scratches on both faces, these are most likely plough damage. This is a weight used on scales as there is no sign of an attachment loop.

Lead Medieval spindle whorl. Circular in plan with a central circular perforation. It is biconical with cast decoration on both faces. One side has diagonal lines from the centre to the edge, creating triangular cells, inside of each of which there is a circular pellet. The other side is slightly less clear, almost looking like a repeating pattern of VIVIVI all the way around. There are examples of spindle whorls with writing and pseudo-writing on, this could be another one.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy Medieval harness pendant, c. 1200- 1400. The pendant is shield shaped in plan, with the broken attachment set perpendicular at the top. On the front face there is the top half of an X in red enamel, which would have filled the field. The rest of the field was probably either enamelled in another colour, or gilded. There is a layer of what could be corroded enamel but it no longer has any colour. The reverse is plain. The hanger is T-shaped in plan, the terminal being bifurcated with holes in each end, to allow a bar to hold the pendant in place (the bar is now …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Redcar and Cleveland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a mount, possibly pewter, most likely Post Medieval in date. What remains is sub-triangular in plan, being slightly domed, with an iron stud on the reverse. On the front there is some sort of decoration with a central vertical strip being cut into the mount. All edges seem broken, even if only small parts are missing, so it is difficult to ascertain the original shape. Only the base of the iron stud remains but it has leached iron corrosion over quite a large part of the mount.

Cast copper alloy finger ring, Post Medieval in date. It is plain with no decoration on either the bezel or the hoop. The hoop is D shaped in cross-section. It has slightly angular shoulders leading up to a flat bezel, a rounded rectangle in plan. This may have had decoration on but there is nothing visible now. The surface may have been treated, perhaps coated with a 'white metal' such as pewter or silver but corrosion has made it unclear.

Cast copper alloy Medieval vessica shaped seal matrix. The front of the seal has a central motif with the inscription around the edge. It is mostly complete but the edges are broken and so most of the inscription is missing, the only section remaining reads 'BENED'[ICT..]. The motif is religious in nature, showing a central figure under an arch (probably a saint), meant to represent being inside a church. Underneath is a small figure kneeling and praying to the central figure. The central figure is holding things in both hands but it is not clear exactly what, possibly an o…
