Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hartlepool
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy Late Medieval finger ring.
The hoop has a circular cross section and widens at the angular shoulders. The hoop is broken near to the bottom but is complete, just being bent slightly out of shape. Because of this the hoop is not fully circular and measures 27.6mm x 25.71mm. The bezel is sub-oval and flat. It has a design in relief in the centre which consists of a W with an indistinct design above- possibly representing a crown- with two scroll like patterns visible.
This type of ring is known as a signet ring and the design could relate to a specific family.
