I have examined a group of 16 coins reported found at Stapleford, Lincolnshire
All of the coins are silver and 14 of them are official English coins, which will therefore be of the traditional sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. Two of the coins are foreign in origin, but are of types found in English contexts quite frequently in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. One is a double patard of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, a coin that from 1469 circulated in England officially as equal to a groat. This was had a fineness of c. 80% silver. The last coin is a Portuguese silver chinfrao, which might have been used as a half-groat equivalent.
The English coins were all struck within the period of the 12-grain penny, 1464 to 1526. They include issues of Edward IV, the restored Henry VI, Richard III and the first Tudor king, Henry VII. They would certainly have circulated together, along with the 2 foreign coins. The group would have been deposited after 1490 but probably before 1504. The face value of the group in English terms was 3 shillings (allowing the chinfrao to pass as a half-groat).
The Stapleford coins were all of good silver and were virtually certainly deposited on a single occasion. It is my opinion, therefore, that they fulfil the criteria of Treasure, according to the terms of the Act.

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal
Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal.
This fitting has a flat trefoil 'button', formed from three adjoining circles. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the head, the shank starting from the centre of the trefoil. The shank emerges at 90° to the 'button', bending as it nears the loop, which is at an angle of around 30° to the 'button', in the same plane. The loop and shank are plain, but the front of the 'button' is decorated. Each of the circles which forms the trefoil has an inner raised circular band creating two fields in each circle which would have been filled with enamel. All three of the central circles have the remains of some enamel, which now appears black but this is due to corrosion and degradation.
Parallels: This fastener does not fit into Wild's (1970) typology, nor is it closely paralleled in the related 1843 hoard.

Terret ring fragment
Fragment of a very robust copper alloy terret ring. It is broken at both ends, leaving only a small section of the full ring. The ring is circular in cross section, and is decorated with a double lip moulding. There is a drilled circular hollow on the interior face of each lip, which may originally have been filled with enamel. There is a raised moulded line around the ring where it meets the lips on either side.
Parallels: The form of the lips is paralleled in many terrets from the related 1843 hoard. In size the piece is closest to M 65-69, which also show drilled indentations, but the form of the lips (solid, with a raised moulded lip where they meet the ring) is more similar to M.52-4. It resembles Spratling's (2011) style group IV.
Measurements: Length: 41.25mm; diameter of ring: 12.61mm to 9.72mm; diameter of lip moulding: 22.95mm; weight: 51g

Fragment of a copper alloy terret ring. It is broken at both ends, leaving less than a quarter of the full ring. The ring is circular in cross section, and is decorated near one end with a double lip moulding. There is iron corrosion all along the fragment, which obscures some of the surface detail, but it is possible that this piece has been mis-cast. Parallels: The form of the lips is very similar to many of the terrets in the related 1843 hoard, being most similar to M.54, Spratling's (2011) style group III.

Small fragment of a cast copper alloy harness fitting with lipped decoration. When complete, it appears that this would have consisted of an outer ring, enclosing a smaller decorative ring. The rings are flat on the reverse, giving a D-shaped cross-section. Both rings are now broken, the remaining fragment consisting of a pair of moulded lips, which lie across the joining section of the two rings. The lips are drilled on the inside, possibly to hold enamel. There is quite a lot of surface corrosion, and on the reverse of the object are the remains of two pieces of charcoal.
Parallels: This is unlikely to have formed part of a terret, as it is not moulded in the round, but could have formed part of a bridle bit ring similar to M.43, or M.44. It resembles Spratling's (2011) style group IV.

A small fragment of a copper alloy fitting, possibly a chain mail armour hook, consisting of a circular or oval terminal, tapering into a narrow neck, and fanning out towards the broken end. The object is flat in cross-section, but is bent up at 90° towards the broken fan-shaped end. In the centre of the terminal, there is a small rivet (circular in cross-section). Both sides of the object, and the rivet itself, show evidence of iron corrosion.
Parallels: This object is very similar to find no. 2, although slightly smaller. It may have formed part of a chain mail fitting similar in function to find no. 1, although like no. 2 this piece is undecorated. Alternatively it could have formed part of a harness fitting or mount.

Fragment of a cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal.
This object comprises only the loop section, which is sub-circular in plan, tapering towards where it would have met the 'button'.
Parallels: This fragment resembles the loops from many other fittings from both the related 1843 hoard and the 2011 assemblage. It is not possible to identify the form of the original object from this fragment, but it is highly likely that it formed part of a button and loop fastener (cf Wild 1970) or strap terminal (cf MacGregor 1962).

Circular iron domed stud, with remains of broad circular-sectioned shank/pin on the reverse, now broken. It is possible that this object might have originally had a copper alloy exterior, but there is no trace of this now.

The ring is circular in cross-section, although wider on one side than on the other, perhaps due to wear. This object is perhaps too small to have been used as a harness fitting, and it is impossible to be sure of its function.

Two amorphous droplets of copper alloy waste, silvery in colour.
Measurements: Max length: 15.5mm; weights: 4.8g and 3.4g (total 8.2g)
Metallurgy: XRF analysis of the surface of these objects confirmed that they are composed of high-tin copper alloys (around 30% tin), with traces of zinc. Both also contained low levels of gold and silver. In the case of the smaller droplet, the gold content was higher, at around 10%.Emma Traherne17Richmond AreaDUR-D186564739111ROMANWASTERestricted Accessfinds-473911116DUR-D18353Fragmentx41218images/frances/1432283PAS4ECD183500164D42011-11-23T15:58:45ZCertainx1399221IRON AGECopper alloy41430IA2Circa16http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/IRON AGECertainSilverCivil Parish2022-07-14T07:10:21.037ZNorth Yorkshire100CountyROMAN1Metal detectorDUR-D156F7.jpg22028From finder232200112011T382IA

Copper alloy rod (three fragments)
Three fragments of copper alloy rod, circular in cross-section. All are broken at both ends, and the surfaces of the fragments are uneven due to corrosion. It is impossible to ascertain their function with certainty, but they are curved, and could have formed part of strap fittings or fasteners.
Measurements: Max length: 21.6mm; diameter: 5.9-6.0mm; total weight: 5.6g

Semi-circular fragment of copper-alloy sheet. The curved edge appears to be original, but the straighter edge is broken. The presence of iron corrosion hints at the possibility that this could once have formed part of a chain mail fastener or fitting, but it is impossible to ascertain its function with certainty.
