Object type: WHISTLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire East

A pewter hawking whistle of Post-Medieval (probably 18th century) date. The object is intact and in good condition. The body is cylindrical, tapering slightly towards the bottom. There is a cylindrical, rounded extension at one end, possibly for an attachment loop. A raised ring at the top separates the body section from the thinner mouth-piece. Immediately below this upper ring is the semi-circular aperture which allows the sound to escape. A second ring is located towards the bottom of the body. The whistle measures 49mm long and has a diameter of 17mm.

It shows a standing man facing fowards with his arms by his side. He appears to be wearing a jacket type garment. He has a sash running diagonally across his torso and a belt. A similar but not exact parallel can be seen in the Museum of London Toys book (Egan and Forsyth; 2005; p174).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pewter spoon fragment from the Post-Medieval period. Only part of the handle and a small part of the bowl remains. It is therefore difficult to date this spoon precisely as the shape of the bowl and the end of the handle are usually the diagnostic features.

Pewter spoon from the Post-Medieval period. The handle has been bent at 90 degrees to the bowl and has broken before the end measuring only 56mm in length. The edges of the bowl have been folded inwards. Due to the fact that the knop of the handle is missing and the bowl is folded over no more precise dating can be given.

Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Two fragments of a cast pewter crotal bell. There is some corrosion on the inside but the rest of the surfaces are still quite smooth. The loop is square with a circular hole. The outside of the bell is decorated with a pattern of circles with dots inside. It probably dates to 16th-18th centuries, however crotal bells have been in use for a long period of time and precise dating can be difficult.

Pewter spoon bowl of Post Medieval date. Spoon bowl, probably pewter which is sub-oval in shape. The edges are ragged, probably due to wear in the ground. The bowl has broken away completely from the stem and none of this remains. Near to where the bowl would have attached to the stem is a stamp with the letters RF (or RP). The bowl is corroded on all surfaces. This spoon was found in the same findspot as LVPL-E9AF43, another Post Medieval spoon bowl.
