Flint flake of probable Mesolithic-Neolithic date (8300BC-2100BC). In plan the flake is sub-rectangular. The top of the flake is fairly flat and is sub-triangular in cross-section. This is the thickest part of the flake and is known as the striking platform. It is also the point where the blade was struck from a larger piece of flint (or core). The object is a Trumpet derivative brooch of the Alcester type, Alcester brooches date to the Roman period or 1st to 2nd century AD. The brooch is made of cast copper alloy and is incomplete.
In plan, the brooch head is sub-oval (similar to those found on regular trumpet brooches) and is recessed at the back. Looking at the reverse of the brooch one can see that the head is heavily abraded and is missing in parts. Examples depicted in Hattatt (Hattatt, R 1987. Brooches of Antiquity. The object is sub-triangular (shield shaped) in plan and sub-rectangular in section. All of the sides of the object are smooth and undamaged. The object is a rotary key. The length from the bow to the terminal of the shank is 74.5mm. The widest part is the handle which is 25.2mm and the thickness of the shank is 9.5mm. The object is made of cast copper alloy and weighs 28.20g
Only part of the bow now remains, the rest is missing. The crescent shape of the bow frame suggests that it may have originally comprised of a sub-circular or oval loop. A post-medieval buckle frame is made from cast copper alloy. An almost identical example to the recorded object can be found in Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households: Medieval and Post Medieval Finds from Norwich Survey, Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology 58) fig. 16, no.172. The length of the buckle is 38.8mm, the width is 24.3mm and the weight is 5.06g. The pin is missing.
