The object is a probable cast lead alloy spindle whorl. The dating of lead spindle whorls is difficult due to the long period of time over which they were used. According to Geake (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide, Version 1.1; August 2001) lead spindle whorls have been found in both Roman and Medieval contexts (Geake 2001, 66). However the recorded object is thought to be Roman in date as it shares some similarities with another Roman spindle whorl from Woodhouse, Northumberland which is also bi-conical and has similar line and pellet decoration on it (Brailsford, J. 1951. The object is a possible fragment of an early Medieval Thomas Class A type 2 strap fitting (Thomas, G. 2003. Late Anglo-Saxon and Viking strap-ends 750-1100: Part 1. Finds Research Group AD700-1700. Datasheet 32, p.2). Although the use of geometric patterns to decorate strap ends continues into the late Medieval, (see for example Fig 96, no.763 in Egan, G and Pritchard, F. 1991 Medieval Finds From Excavations in London: 3. Dress Accessories c.1150 - c.1450, HMSO, London), the style of the design and the shape of the object suggest a date around the ninth or tenth century AD. The fragm…

The material has occasional sub-rounded inclusions of quartz (less than 1mm). The fragment is 99.4mm x 69.9mm at the base, 53.1mm high and 34.1mm thick. The…
