Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
The object is a probable cast lead alloy spindle whorl. The dating of lead spindle whorls is difficult due to the long period of time over which they were used. According to Geake (Geake, H. 2001 Finds Recording Guide, Version 1.1; August 2001) lead spindle whorls have been found in both Roman and Medieval contexts (Geake 2001, 66). However the recorded object is thought to be Roman in date as it shares some similarities with another Roman spindle whorl from Woodhouse, Northumberland which is also bi-conical and has similar line and pellet decoration on it (Brailsford, J. 1951. Br…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint flake of probable Mesolithic-Neolithic date (8300BC-2100BC). In plan the flake is sub-rectangular. The top of the flake is fairly flat and is sub-triangular in cross-section. This is the thickest part of the flake and is known as the striking platform. It is also the point where the blade was struck from a larger piece of flint (or core). The area directly below the striking platform is quite thick and pointed. This area is called the bulb of percussion (positive) and is caused by the impact that was used to produce the flake. The dorsal (upper face) has three arrises (ridges) wi…
