A medieval, silver halfpenny of Edward III. Description: The coin has been severely clipped and also sustained some post-depositional damage so is very reduced in size and weight. It is also very worn but the detail of the bust that is visible shows a small face with sunken eyes. There is also a star visible at the end of the obverse legend confirming this as a halfpenny of Edward III's star-marked coinage of 1335-1343. It is most probably a Withers Type 5. The obverse legend appears to be fictitious and the reverse legend reads IVITAS DVBLINIE with the C missing from the beginning of CIVITAS. Contemporary copies of Edward I Irish pennies are known from the UK and the continent but halfpennies are not as common.
