A pair of cast copper alloy Roman or Early Medieval tweezers. They have an oval-shaped loop terminal, having a broad longitudinal groove. Both arms are decorated with zones of transverse lines and corresponding bevelled edges. The decoration starts at the base of the loop with three sets of three narrow grooves and ridges. Then after a gap of c.10mm there are two similar bands, again with bevelled edges. This decoration finishes about halfway along the arms, which then flare toward their ends which turn in at an angle of around 90 degrees. The tweezers measure 50.11mm in length, 3.41m…

A pair of copper alloy tweezers of Roman to Anglo-Saxon date. They are complete, and part of the ring by which they were attached to a toilet set remains within the corrosion in the loop. The tweezers have narrow arms at the loop terminal, where there are bands of transverse decoration on both sides, comprising three ribs and grooves. There is punched decoration along the length of both arms, with eight ring and dot motifs on one side and seven on the other, leading to the blade terminals, where there are two flanking ring and dots on both sides. An incised marginal groove runs parall…

A copper alloy tweezers fragment of probable Roman date. The fragment consists of one arm and part of the loop, made from sheet metal. The arm has been bent out of shape, and forms a right angle at its mid point, flaring toward its blade terminal. This is incomplete due to old breaks, and has broken off to give a straight edge. The loop terminal is also incomplete, and is broken off at the centre of the loop. The surface of the tweezers is very worn, but an incised marginal groove of decoration following the long edges of the arm can be determined. The tweezers measure 37.66mm in unfol…

a complete set of copper alloy tweezers. They measure 57.51mm in length, with the arms measureing 4.54mm near the loop and tapering very slightly to the terminals. One arm terminal bends inwards at right angles. The other has been bent out of shape and the terminal straightened. The tweezers weigh 4.06g.
Sheet copper-alloy tweezers of this type are present from the Roman to the medieval period and are very difficult to date more accurately without an excavated context. However, as this example was discovered in an area which has yielded predominantly Anglo-Saxon finds they are perhaps…

a copper alloy arm from a pair of tweezers, of Roman or Anglo-Saxon date. It is triangular in shape, with the arm flaring to one terminal, where it measures 8.13mm in width, and turns in at an angle of forty five degrees. It is broken off at the opposite terminal before the loop, and is 3.48mm wide. Two zones of incised line decoration can be seen, close to this terminal, one of four lines and one of three, and both have traces of gilding. The extant length of tweezer arm is 34.13mm, and it weighs 0.96g.

a complete pair of cast copper alloy tweezers, with an estimated length of 64mm in length. The tweezers are distorted, with both arms bent. Both arms flare from the loop to the terminals (from 5.3mm to 8.82mm wide) where they bend inwards at a 45 degree angle.
Each arm is decorated just below the loop with a panel of five transverse grooves, and there is another panel of similar decoration at 11.25mm below the first, again on each arm. Both arms have worn surfaces, and there is no trace of any further decoration.
The tweezers are similar to another pair from Yaxley, SF-592E71, and …

a complete pair of cast copper alloy tweezers, measuring 64.3mm in length. Both arms flare slightly from the loop to the terminals (from 5mm to 6.85mm) where they bend inwards at a 45 degree angle.
Each arm is decorated just below the loop with three transverse grooves, and there is another panel of similar decoration at 6.45cm below the first, again on each arm. Both arms have worn surfaces, and there is no trace of any further decoration.
The tweezers are similar to another pair from Yaxley, SF-E97375, and are likely to be early Anglo-Saxon in date by association. Tweezers of this…

copper alloy Roman tweezers. The two arms flare to the terminals where they are curved gently inwards. They measure 30.85mm in length, by 5.50mm at the terminals. The loop is 3.48mm wide. Tweezers of a similar size and design from Colchester are illustrated in Crummy 1983, no.1885.
