Record ID: SF-034055
Object type: PROBE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
a probable Roman copper alloy probe terminal. It is incomplete due to old breaks, and consists of an oval-shaped terminal and length of shaft, not enough of which survives to determine whether the instrument was part of a double-ended spoon-probe. It measures 39.76mm in surviving length and 5.35mm in width. The shaft is circular in section near the terminal, and flattens out as it tapers towards its broken end. The object weighs 1.73g.
Examples of spoon-probes from Colchester are illustrated in Crummy,1983, fig.65.

Object type: PROBE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Essex

a copper alloy Roman probe terminal. This is probably from a toilet spoon, but only the probe and a short length of shaft, broken in antiquity, survive. The probe is solid, and an elongated oval-shape measuring 22.61mm in length. The shaft is circular in cross-section, and 1.9mm in diameter, and survives for a length of 15.32mm. Very similar examples are known from Roman Colchester.
Probes are thought to have been used for the application of cosmetics, or medicaments, particularly to the eye or ear areas.
