A copper alloy Medieval harness pendant. It is incomplete due to old breaks, and is missing its loop for suspension and the knops which give this type of pendant an octofoil shape. It is a flat disc bearing traces of incised line decoration forming part of a star near the centre. All around the edges is a mass of tiny punched circles, any intended pattern or clustering being undiscernible due to wear and patination of the metal. There are traces of gilding on this surface. The pendant is approximatley oval, and measures 38.53mm by 35.96mm. It weighs 5.65g. Similar pendants from Norf…

A copper alloy medieval harness pendant. It is a quatrefoil shape and complete, though the right side lobe is worn and flattened. The suspension loop at the top is turned at 90 degrees to the body of the pendant. There is a shield with three lions on the front with traces of gilding, which an also be seen in patches on the lobes. Due to the amount of wear, it is not possible to be certain that there are fleurs de lis in the top and side lobes. The shield descends into the lower lobe. Ashley suggests a date post 1340 for this type of harness mount, when the fleur de lis of France was q…

A Medieval copper alloy harness pendant. It is shield-shaped, with the remains of an integral suspension loop turned at ninety degrees at the centre of the upper edge. No trace of decoration survives on the outer surface, but there are some lines of stress, indicating that the object has been damaged in antiquity. Traces of gilding can be determined. The harness pendant measures 48.64mm in length to the top of the broken loop, 31.29mm in width across the shoulder, and weighs 6.29g.

A copper alloy probable medieval harness pendant, largely comprising the extant suspension mount. The object has a lozengiform terminal 19.7mmin length, the surface of which is now corroded, but has traces of three raised diagonal bars which have created fields presumably for infilling with enamel (now missing). The point of the lozenge appears to have had a hole drilled through, with the remains of a rivet rusted in situ (non magnetic). There is one complete loop, and one that is broken, projecting on either side from the horizontal points of the lozenge. The complete loop measures 4.…

A copper alloy medieval harness pendant. It is a narrow, triangular shape with a loop at the top turned at ninety degrees. The pendant is 5.8mm in width at the shoulders and expands to its lower terminal which is 17.1mm wide, and is incomplete due to old beaks. The recessed areas around the crowns would have been filled with enamel, and there are a few spots of a darkish, ?red deposit visible. The pendant measures 40.57mm in length, 30.13mm in width, and weighs 8.18g. Ashley illustrates two examples of trefoil harness pendants from Norfolk, and describes them as a comparatively rare type. A medieval copper alloy elaborate quatrefoil pendant from a harness. It is a quatrefoil with a knop at each angle, with a square-topped shield extending to the upper pair of knops and its rounded base flanked by the lower pair. Copper alloy medieval harness pendant. It is an elaborate quatrefoil shape with angle projections, and with the suspension loop turned at ninety degrees, incomplete due to old breaks. Any decoration or coat of arms is obscured by a reddish corrosion which occurs all over the pendant. It is 21.77mm in length, 12mm in width and weighs 1.09g. A copper alloy Medieval harness pendant. It has a cruciform shape, with lobed terminals to each arm of the cross, forming a quatrefoil. There is a perforation through the centre, circular at the front but hexagonal on the back surface. This would have taken a stud, probably to hold a strap or ribbon. (Griffiths in Clark ed.1995,no.59) The loop for suspension extends from the upper lobed arm and is turned at ninety degrees. There are traces of gilding on the outer surface. A Medieval harness pendant. It is lozenge-shaped with an incomplete suspension loop, and has a curved profile, probably due to plough damage. It is very corroded and the only decoration visible on the outer surface is an initial letter A. The corrosion product most likely includes enamel which would have filled the field surrounding the initial. The pendant measures 36.48mm in length and 26.15mm in width, and weighs 4.07g. The use of an initial letter for decoration is not common, with armorial devices being more usual on harness pendants. The letter 'A' does occur as a letter badge, …
