A copper alloy object, probably a late Iron Age to Roman cosmetic mortar, or pestle. The object is crescent-shaped, with upper edges that are worn to either side of a very shallow chanel on the upper surface. One terminal is flattened, whilst the other has a knop which is phallic in profile, but which opens out at the centre. One side of the knop is complete whilst the other is broken. One side of the mortar has tiny punched circles outlining the edges but excluding the knop. Whilst the object resembles a cosmetic mortar, it is very small, and the chanel along the upper surface may be…

A copper-alloy Late Iron Age to Roman cosmetic mortar with a central stem or handle of unusual form. The bow is crescent shaped, but lacks one terminal, due to old breaks. It is 45.77mm in surviving length, 9mm wide across its centre, 7.61mm thick across its centre and the internal longitudinal groove is c.4mm deep. The surviving terminal of the bow has moulded decoration in the form of a rounded knob or phallus. It weighs 8.21g. The surface of the object is very worn. There may be traces of transverse line decoration but surface pitting makes it difficult to tell. At the centre o…
