Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Medieval stud. It is shield-shaped, with a flat top, and rounded corners at the base and a slight knop at the centre. There are traces of armorial decoration, (a bend cotised between six lions rampant) with a band from top left to bottom right, and a suggestion of the three lions to either side. This device is part of the armory of the de Bohun, Earls of Hereford and Essex. The metalwork is worn and corroded which obscures the detail. On the reverse is a single integral rivet 4mm in thickness, which has been flattened against the stud. The object measures 31.62mm in len…

A copper alloy object, probably a late Iron Age to Roman cosmetic mortar, or pestle. The object is crescent-shaped, with upper edges that are worn to either side of a very shallow chanel on the upper surface. One terminal is flattened, whilst the other has a knop which is phallic in profile, but which opens out at the centre. One side of the knop is complete whilst the other is broken. One side of the mortar has tiny punched circles outlining the edges but excluding the knop. Whilst the object resembles a cosmetic mortar, it is very small, and the chanel along the upper surface may be…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy cup weight of Post-Medieval date. The cup has a flat base and gently flaring sides, most of which have striations cutting into the metal and presumably the result of disturbance by agricultural machinery. The rim is flat and the cup is c.3.2mm in thickness, 24.44mm in diamter across the base and is 21.28mm in height. There are two concentric lines incised around the centre, both inside and out, presumably defining a measure. The cup weighs 53.83g (1.9 oz), and may be part of a nested set. The object's density suggests a high lead content within the copper alloy.
