A copper alloy Medieval purse bar fragment. It is the central box, perforated longitudinally through the centre which would have held a swivelling loop. It also includes two short lengths of projecting arms both of which are heavily moulded, the decoration suggesting abstract animal head terminals. The central 'box' is incised all over with cross-hatched lines on one side, but with only a pair of parallel lines on the other.The top of the box is flat, and the lower terminal has curving shoulder sloping inwards. A Late Medieval cast copper alloy purse frame fragment. It is incomplete due to old breaks, and is a short length of frame which is curved, and has a V-shaped section. There is incised line decoration in the form of cross- hatching on the outside edge, and a single rivet hole, for attachment to a purse, on the inside edge. Tool marks can be determiend along the inside edge. The purse frame fragment measures 40.79mm in length, 7.07mm in width, and weighs 8.63g. A similar frame fragment from medieval Norwich can be seen in Margeson 1993, no.290.

A copper alloy Late Medieval-Post-Medieval purse bar fragment. It consists of one arm of the bar and the central block, with the swivel loop and its fixing rove moving freely within the block. There is a large spherical knop on the end of the bar, decorated with eight spiral grooves. The object measures 48.84mm in surviving width, 39.31mm in length across the loop to the rove, 10.23mm in thickness across the block, and weighs 26.33g.

A copper alloy Post-Medieval purse frame bar. It is square in section, with side width of 5.95mm, and has short projections c.4mm in width at either end, finishing with hexagonal-shaped studs, and a length of 36.38mm. The loop from one arm of the frame is attached, but is incomplete due to old breaks and the rest of the frame is missing. There is a stud in situ at the centre of the bar but no loop is attached. Below the bar, the stud bifurcates, with two arms of c.13mm in length both incomplete due to old breaks. The purse bar weighs 12.25g.

A copper alloy Late Medieval purse bar. The bar is cast in one and comprises two short faceted arms on either side of a central block which is perforated to take the shank from the loop, now missing. The attachment plates run the full width of the bar arms and each has three perforations. A collar marks the ends of the bar from which two short cylindrical knops project. The bar measures 47.49mm in length, 12.4mm in width including the attachment plates, and weighs 13.56g.

A copper alloy Late Medieval to Post-Medieval purse bar. It consists of a circular loop which moves freely on a separate central block, the top of which is bent round the loop to contain it. There is an integral rove at the base of the block to fix it in position. The bar has two arms, both of which are faceted to give a lozenge-shaped section. One is incomplete due to old breaks, and the other is bent upward at right angles, apparently deliberately. It has an expanded circular, domed terminal. The purse bar measures 29.7mm in length, 41.14mm in surviving width, and weighs 13.09g.

A copper alloy Late to Post-Medieval purse bar with swivel loop. It is complete, with a bar of square section and circular domed terminals, which rise to a point at their centres. The central block is square and plain. The loop is fixed to the bar by an integral shank which passes through the block and terminates with a circular, faceted rove. The loop is an elongated drop shape. The purse measures 54.56mm in length, 67.41mm in width across the bar, and weighs 34.82g.

A copper alloy Post-Medieval bar fragment from a purse. It is a rectangular bar with a triangular profile, hollow on the underside. It is incomplete due to old breaks at both the narrow terminals. There is a pattern of engraved cross-hatching decorating the outside long edge, and rivet holes along the inner edge for attachment. The bar measures 76.8mm in length and 6.11mm in width. it weighs 15.4g. An identical piece from Norwich is illustrated in Margeson,1993, no.290.

A copper alloy Late Medieval purse bar. It is a horizontal bar, circular in section with a central rectangular block pierced for a swivel loop that is missing. The terminals are moulded spherical knops with a six-line faceted twist pattern. The bar measures 24.07mm in length and is 5.53mm in width. The central rectangle measures 11.74mm in height and 16.24mm in width, and the terminal spheres are 12.65mm and 12.32mm in circumference. The purse bar weighs 30.63g.
Read dates a similar example to 1475-1550 (Read 1995, p.77, no.437).

A medieval copper alloy loop from a purse bar. It is in one piece, consisting of an oval loop with D-shaped section, with an integral collar above a central rectangular section(17.52mm x 9.32mm) and truncated cone shaped terminal. It measures 52.47mm in length, and 17.68mm in width and weighs 18.69g. The cross-pieces to which a purse would have been attached are missing. It is likely to date to the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries.

a late Medieval to Early post-Medieval copper alloy purse bar and loop. The loop is D-shaped with a bulbous shank, which passes through the central block and is fixed by a rove underneath. The loop element swivels on the bar. The bar is rectangular and when viewed from above can be seen to swell to a rounded profile at the central block. The attachment plates are rectangular, 14.1mm in length, and each has two holes. part of a Post Medieval copper alloy purse frame. It is a curved strip with a 'U' shaped section and is incomplete. One terminal has a flat circular loop, for attachment to a purse bar and the opposite terminal is missing. The frame is pierced by three regularly spaced holes (35mm apart) on the inside section, which would have allowed for attachment of this frame to a cloth purse. The outside section is decorated with cross hatching. Part of a copper alloy late Medieval purse frame. It is an incomplete narrow strip 69.79mm in length and 8.08mm wide, weighing 12.76g. It is folded, having an 'L' shaped profile. The bar is curved, towards each of its broken terminals, and has one small rivet hole close to the long edge on the narrower side. This side also has diagonal lines scored across it. The opposite, wider side has an inscription with large indented letters occupying the full width . The inscription reads: ( ) TOREN CELI ET

A copper alloy Medieval purse bar arm. It is oval in cross-section, and is incomplete, measuring 43.59mm in length, and 13.60mm wide. It weighs 15.73g. There is a collared terminal knop at one end, and an integral attachment plate pierced with two holes. The surface of the arm has a pattern of two parallel lines forming a criss-cross decoration. A 15th century incomplete copper alloy arm from a purse bar with an integral attachment plate pierced with 2 rivet holes. There is a criss-cross pattern of double lines decorating the arm, with indications of mineralised niello inlay. There is a terminal knop at one end and the other is broken just beyond the attachment plate. It is 63.53mm long and 9.89mm wide. It weighs 17.78g.
