A copper alloy late Iron Age or Roman cosmetic pestle. It has a curved, concave shape with a circular cross section, tapering in width to one terminal which is rounded and worn. The opposite terminal curves over to form a loop handle. The pestle measures 37.16mm in length, 4.11mm in thickness tapering to 2.10mm, and weighs 3.58g. Pestles such as this were designed for use with a cosmetic mortar. They appear to date from the late Iron Age and continue in use into the second century (Jackson, Britannia 1985, p175-176).

A copper alloy Late Iron Age to Roman cosmetic pestle. It has a curvilinear, faceted rod with one terminal incomplete due to old breaks and the other finshing with a loop. This loop is flattened, with a section which is approximately rectangular. A short collar in the form of a narrow, rectangular plate protrudes at the junction of the loop with the rod. The pestle measures 46.41mm in length, 2.63mm in width across the rod, which tapers to 2.19mm, 11.3mm in external diameter across the ring, and weighs 3.44g. A copper-alloy cosmetic pestle of Late Iron Age or Roman date. The stem is crescent-shaped and measures 34.48mm in length and 5.75mm in width. Its cross-section is oval and it is 5mm thick, at its thickest point. The tips of the stem taper to a width of 2.5mm and are undecorated as are the majority of pestles. It weighs 4.56g. The pestle would have had a centre loop, but is incomplete, broken off due to old breaks across the rectangular shank for the loop. Whilst there are patches of corrosion there is no sign of wear along the base of the pestle. It dates to the 1st and 2nd centuries …
