A wedge-shaped piece of quernstone of probable Roman, or later date. It is of grey lava, with a curved outer edge bearing tool marks, 50.83mm in thickness, tapering to 18mm in thickness at the opposite edge,(which would be towards the centre of the quern). It measures 51.44mm in length and 25.44mm in width. It weighs 1041g.

A fragment of Hertfordshire pudding stone rotary quern. Part of the top, curved surface survives(42mmx32mm)and more of the lower surface, c.50mm x 60mm. The vertical, curving groove, 23mm in width, which runs through the centre of the quern is also extant. The fragment measures 91.82mm in height, 78.6mm in width and weighs 643g.

Piece of Hertfordshire puddingstone quern, of probably first century, Roman date. It is a solid domed shape, 84mm in height at the centre, and 50% of the stone is present, with an estimated diameter of 340mm. The quern weighs 5830g. At the centre of the broken section of the quern is the funnel-shaped aperture, through which the grain would have been fed, 44.2mm in diameter at the top, approximately 15mm in the centre and 31.5mm at the bottom of the quern. A complete, part-polished stone axe of Neolithic date, c.4000-2500 BC. It is oval in shape, with an oval section, and flares from the butt toward the cutting edge which is crescentic. The stone is a dense grey-green and may be from a source in the Lake District. Both faces of the axe show signs of wear, and there are areas where the surfaces are polished, running in a roughly triangular patch from the cutting edge to the centre of the axehead on both sides. The object measures 108.76mm in length, 48.20mm in width, 26.25mm in thickness and weighs 178.54g.

a piece of grey lava quernstone, of probable Roman date. It is curved, with tool marks forming a rim (57mm wide) on the upper edge, and the estimated diameter is 420 mm, with approximately 30% of the stone extant. It is 60mm thick at the outside edge which is also tooled, tapering to 10mm at the opposite edge (being the centre of the complete quern).The quern is broken off on one side, at the point where it was socketed. The underside is slightly dished, showing signs of wear.It weighs 3440g.

A hone stone, of possible Anglo-Saxon to Medieval date. It is approximately rectangular, 41.79mm in length and 14.54mm in width tapering to one terminal. This is worn with rounded edges but broken off at the tip, and is perforated with a circular hole 6mm from the terminal edge. The hone is 5.4mm in thickness here, but tapers to 2.3mm at the opposite terminal, the edge of which is also worn.Both sides have been worn smooth. The hone weighs 4.37g. Hones of this type were for personal use and were perforated in order to suspend them from a leather belt. Examples are known from Viking …

a complete whetstone of unknown date. It is a light grey stone with a little mica, rectangular in shape with a flattened oval cross-section at the terminals, which are both flat. There are two flat, rectangular areas, each with significant patches of wear, one near each terminal. They have been worked so as to create an angle of 45 degrees between them, resulting in an uworked central bulbous area. The whetstone measures 86.86mm in length and is 20.6mm wide. a medieval stone hone. It is a complete rectangular hone 53.03mm long and 13.65mm wide at one terminal. It tapers to 9.52mm at the opposite terminal, which is rounded. A circular hole pierces through the hone at 12.51mm from the wider terminal.With the hole uppermost, the left side of the hone is worn, where it has been used for sharpening a blade. It weighs 13.25g. Similar hones have been found in a fourteenth century context, as at York and Winchester (refs. below) but this type of hone could be of any date from the tenth to fifteenth centuries.

an early medieval or later stone spindle whorl. It is circular with a hole pierced through the centre. One side is flattened around the hole. The outer surface is smooth and has signs of wear including some pitting. It is 29.54mm in diameter and 21.46mm in height, and weighs 23.45g. Spindle whorls of this type were current from the Anglo-Saxon period onwards, but there are no associations to qualify the date of this piece.
