A copper alloy Early Medieval cruciform brooch fragment. It is the animal head terminal only, the rest of the object is missing due to old breaks. The terminal is worn with patches of corrosion. The animal head consists of a pair of ears above a transverse groove. The animal's snout is squared off with a hint of knops at each corner to suggest nostrils. The metalwork running round the edge of the snout has split in antiquity and a tiny rivet has been placed at the centre of the snout near the nostrils, to hold the terminal together. Whilst this is reminiscent of a strap-end terminal i…

Three adjoining potsherds of Early Medieval date. The breaks are due to recent activity, probably the result of ploughing. The pottery has a brown, partly burnished surface and is tempered with fine grits, some mica and occasional larger white flint. When assembled, the sherds show a vessel, probably hand-made, with a wide and curving groove and resulting rib, running horizontally around it. Whilst there is some uncertainty about the date, it seems most likely that these are sherds from an Anglo-Saxon vessel such as a decorated bi-conical urn. Sherds of similar type have been recorded…

A copper alloy probable Early Medieval object, possibly part of a button. The object is incomplete, and semi-circular, and has a molten appearance. It measures 21.38mm in diameter, 7.42mm in thickness and weighs 4.23g. On the reverse there is part of a stud or fastening loop, also incomplete due to old breaks. It is probable that this object has come from a cremation deposit. Whilst insufficient remains for a positive identification, it is possible that this is a button fragment. Examples of buttons from Brandon (Fig.11, no.1)and Butley,(Fig 15, no.6), are illustrated in West 1998 .
