A copper alloy buckle frame dating to the early-medieval or medieval period. The bar is narrowed but not offset, with a circular, faceted cross-section. The rest of the frame has a slightly rounded upper surface with a flat reverse. It is D-shaped, with a notched protrusion at the mid-point of the outside edge, where a pin could rest, and two notched protrusions on the exterior edge, on on the top and one on the bottom, close to the junction of the loop with the bar. The metal is worn and corroded, so details of decoration are obscured, but all around the upper surface of the buckl…

A copper alloy late Early Medieval buckle frame, (11th century). It is D-shaped, with a thickened outside edge which is faceted. There are animal-head terminals facing each other to either side of the bar, which is narrowed and circular in section. They have dots for eyes and ears which are flattened against the head; they hold the bar in their mouths. The metalwork is pitted and patinated and any other decorative detail is now lost. Along the centre of the ridge on the outside edge there is a short strip of oblique grooves forming cable decoration. A pin rest is visible on one side o…

A copper alloy buckle plate or hinged object, of Early Medieval or later date. The object is made from sheet metal and is incomplete due to old breaks. It is circular, coming to an incomplete roughly straight edge on one side, and with two extending arms on the opposite side. These are both small, 4.83mm in length and 2.9mm wide, with recurved ends forming loops, which could have wrapped round the frame of a buckle. The plate is perforated with two circular rivet holes near its centre and 4.6mm apart. The object measures 17.36mm in length, 19.33mm in surviving width and weighs 0.89g…

a complete copper alloy buckle frame of Early Medieval to medieval date. It is a single-looped buckle frame and is D-shaped. The loop itself is D-shaped in section with rounded edges, and ends in an animal head at each end of the narrowed circular-section bar. The animal heads are small with triangular ears pressed back against the frame, and a long rounded snout slightly upturned and protruding beyond the bar. There are traces of moulding for a pin rest on the bar. The surfaces are abraded and corroded and no further trace of decoration or moulding can be determined. The buckle fram…

a copper alloy probable buckle fragment of Early Medieval date. It is a flat rectangular band measuring 19mm in length, 12.18mm in width and is 0.5mm thick. One short terminal has a semi-circular aperture in the centre, suggesting part of a rivet hole. The opposite terminal is incomplete due to an old break . The upper surface is decorated with two rows of crescent-shaped stamps, each set close to the long edges of the mount. Examples of this type of buckle are illustrated in Macgregor and Bolick, 1993.
